Ask the same people who’s on Dancing With The Stars and they’ll have no problem getting that correct.

Depends on whether you count people who think they are stars.

Several problems.
People tend to be sloppy on how they communicate about science and technical issues.
This is how the uber-left manipulates the voter.
Second, people don’t try and understand science. We have (thankfully very few) FR’s who still think the earth is only 4000 years old.

Grasping aspects of science requires interest and the effort to understand things which are not always easy.

I’ve come to the conclusion that like art, astronomy is for those who can appreciate it. There’s not really much practical use for it unless you happen to work for NASA or something. For myself, I just enjoy accumulating knowledge on the subject that most people would consider useless in their day to day lives.

Gee, give them a break. They were probably texting and you interrupted them with your question.

I heard someone had posted something similar on facebook. Some arrogant preteen commented the sun isn’t a star.

“A sun is a sun and a star is a star. The sun isn’t a star.”

Want real fun? Discuss moon phases, like why there are moon phases and what causes them.

One fun thing to do if conditions are right (standing in sunlight with a crescent moon in the sky), hold up an orange next to the moon, it will be exactly the same phase!

I ran across an author who wrote dramatically that “the full Moon rose at midnight...” and could not understand that that can’t happen.

For more fun, August 21 2017 there will be a total solar eclipse in the USA. If you get a really ignorant person, you may be able to convince them that if they sign their car title over to you, you’ll bring back the sun (you gotta get this done quickly, though).
