Portland Officer Shot, K-9 Killed in Gunfight
KOIN ^ | Wednesday, April 16, 2014 | Brent Weisberg

The K-9 German Shepherd Portland police searched for much of Wednesday morning was found dead with at least one gunshot wound a little before 10 a.m.

The dog was hurt during an officer-involved shooting just before 3 a.m. near Southwest Capitol Highway and Lobelia Street.

A suspect, armed with a weapons similar to an AR-15 rifle, also wounded an officer, though those injuries are considered to be not life threatening.

Earlier, officers were investigating a burglary at a uniform supply store that sold police equipment, where a vehicle was located with three suspects inside.

Reese said officers saw three people coming from a uniform shop. They fled in an SUV and were chased by police.

The chase ended when the SUV hit a utility pole.

The officer released the K-9 in pursuit and gunfire was exchanged.

The suspect carrying the rifle — which was later found on scene — fled on foot, Portland Police Bureau Chief Mike Reese said Wednesday.

Three suspects are in custody.

The suspected shooter, whose name has not yet been released, was confronted at gunpoint by officers in the 6900 block of SW Olson Road and then surrendered. That is about three miles from where the shooting took place.

The K-9 officer

The dog was relatively new to the force and was not wearing a ballistic vest, said Reese.

Rather, it was wearing a non-ballistic harness system. The dog’s name won’t be released until the officer’s family has been notified.

In Oregon, assaulting a law enforcement animal is a class C felony.

‘Damn fine police work’

Police are still investigating how many shots were fired. Reese said it’s rare for people to shoot at officers – but, there have been two instances in the last month.

“Damn fine police work” led to the arrest, said Reese.

Little information is available about the suspect.

A community effort

The Bureau of Emergency Communications initiated a reverse 911 call to residents in the neighborhood requesting they stay in their homes and to call 911 if they saw anything suspicious.

Residents who called 911 were critical to helping police find the suspected shooter, Simpson said.

The suspect was taken into custody shortly before 6 a.m. and was taken to a hospital, Simpson said. It is unclear if the suspect was wounded in the gunfight with the officer or if he was wounded while running from police.

Sad for the dog.

They obey us always, often to their own death.

:(

"They obey us always"

I wish...my dog has the demeanor of a Chesapeake. (some claim a 2x4 is sometimes required for proper training)

She would, however, quickly return if I went down for any reason.

You know what I meant.

Both of my Dobes [well, the girl, in particular] are hard-headed beasts.

That’s part of their mindset, however, and one of the reasons why they fell out of favor with law enforcement.

An independently minded dog will sometimes say “Oh, hell no. I might get hurt.” and decide your command was a stupid idea.

:)

I believe that ranchers and farmers have a great deal of respect for life. They have a much closer view of life and death than most of us. I am aware, but only vaguely, where my beef slices come from.

And, OK, I give up - where, exactly, did the dog bite you when you were arrested?

"I should have compared the loss of the dog to the loss of an unreliable rebuilt police cruiser. "

Dogs know people with a very good track record.

If you see a loose dog you should run (or shoot), 'cause they likely have your number.

No.

I have known people who were bitten by police dogs simply because they have a fear of dogs and the training of the dogs is insufficient for them to distinguish between a fleeing criminal, and a bystander with a phobia of dogs who runs instictively. Police dog bites can tear up someone who is frightened and trying to get free.

A police dog is like a rifle without even iron sites on it.

Some are better than others but at the end of the day they should only be used for locating things or in situations where innocent bystanders are not even a possibility.

And, Human life is so precious that God took on human form to die for humanity. That should never, ever be cheapened by attempting to raise the value of a mere animal to that of a human being.

Dogs never fail to love me up...even when their thug owner assures me they’re ‘bad ass killers’.

You REALLY are a jerk.

these dogs save many lives in combat...try telling our combat soldiers they are “hippy treehugger types’ cause they respect and value their dogs!

hey, why don’t you go face to face with a combat soldier who has had their lives saved by a a “dog”..and tell them your arrogant, self-righteous,” intellectual” snide comments..instead of on the internet safe from your sofa.

Oh, you are so correct, like the Pharasees who spouted the law, but did not have compassion in their hearts.
go ahead, flame away...you’ve got all the words, all the correct arguments.

"Dogs never fail to love me up...even when their thug owner assures me they’re ‘bad ass killers’."

Even my generally (publicly), at first, "aggressive" dog can be an instant sweetheart when approached by a true dog lady. I never cease to be amazed.

Treats help.
