Donald Rumsfeld writes the IRS: I have no idea if my tax returns are accurate

"I know that I do not know."

Sigh. There are many things I miss about the Bush Administration. And very high on the list is Donald Rumsfeld, who suffers fools not at all but employs a wonderful sense of humor in the process. Yesterday he released a letter he wrote to the IRS on tax day to let the Lerner Brigades know that he has no idea whatsoever if the returns he's filing are accurate.

Enjoy:

I’m sure Obastard’s IRS would be more than happy to audit Secretary Rumsfeld’s tax returns for the past 25 years, just to set his mind at ease.

I have a master’s degree in Computer Science, have taken graduate level Symbolic Logic, and had to resort to TurboTax about 12 years ago because I could not, with any degree of confidence, do the computation for the AMT. I know how to follow an IF..THEN...ELSE, but not the way that the IRS presents it!

That’s fantastic! I have a BS in Finance. An MBA. I work in corporate finance and deal with numbers all day. I have no clue if mine are right. I trust Turbo Tax becaus there is no way I could do it all on my own. Utterly ridiculous.

I am sure they have audited his returns, along with every member of the former Bush admin and everyone in Congress with an R after their names.

My theory is they make it as confusing as possible so they have an excuse to audit those they want to audit. “Oh Mr. Rumsfeld, you did in fact make an error and we do believe it may have been made in past returns as well. We are going to have to set up an audit..”

Rummy’s a true patriot.

I had the privilege of flying him and his wife, once. He autographed a TO data card for me, and it’s one of my prized possessions.

My theory is they make it as confusing as possible...

I think it has grown more and more complex as would be expected with any government program.

Until, sometime during the 1980s, lobbyists began to "carve out" special exemptions which seemed to have sent the complexity through the roof.

And yes, much of that complexity is intentional, for both their ability to audit and create exemptions/deductions for their friends.

That's the point, innit?
The tax code is far too voluminous, far too too complicated to ever be sure you are in compliance.
It's a tool to generate fear.

I heard Timmy Geitner has opened a tax consulting firm if that will help.

Rummey should have just taken the Fifth like Lois Lerner did, rather than sign his tax return. He could then explain in his letter that he had been careful to meet the same standards of honesty and disclosure as the IRS requires of its managers. He hopes that will be satisfactory.

Rummy is setting a trap for the IRS to target him with an audit.

If they do, he goes public with further proof they harass conservatives as a policy.

Maybe, but just being honest can set a wheel in motion.

Heck, I don’t know if mine are accurate. I drive my own car for 90% business and 10% life. I have rental property. I give to charity and have tools needing replacement which my company doesn’t cover.

It’s hard for tax act to catch the depreciation on materials and charity in the form of old materials.

Whatever. Go 10% across the board for everybody and get rid of this lunacy.

Don is one of the Americans that I wished to see in the White House as leader of our country. He really is a man's man.
