Question for FReeperdom members who have experience with the Remington 7XX series in .308. Bought a slightly used rifle, a 770. Had it inspected by the 'smith at the gun store, zero'd for 200 yds. Son took it shooting yesterday and intermittently when he opened the action the bolt would slide all the out the rear, requiring re-assembly insertion. He was shooting with an experienced 7XX friend who of course made him check the release lever, and they found no obvious fault.
Any thoughts on what to check for or inspect prior to letting the 'smithy look at it for real?
And as is typical on gun threads, I will pre-empt the h8-ers: not interested in other makes and models or your derogatory comments about this series of rifle and its long-gone trigger issues.

Clean and lubricate.
The bolt release is not popping back up in place to hold the bolt.
This. I suspect a bit of gunk or grit.

Good point. I had disassembled it and cleaned after buying, but you are right - situations like this ARE usually due to dirt/gunk/lack of PROPER lube.
I have a .22 semi-auto rifle that is amazingly sensitive to a clean action. Pretty much all jams on ejection go away with a good ‘detailing’.

According to the Business Wire, Remington Arms has announced a voluntary recall of Model 700 and Model Seven rifles manufactured from May 1, 2006 to April 9, 2014, Saturday.
Senior Engineers at Remington determined that some of the rifles with X-Mark Pro (XMP) triggers could, under certain circumstances, unintentionally discharge due to the presence of excess bonding agent used in the assembly process.
Remington has since advised customers to immediately cease use of recalled rifles and return them to Remington free of charge.
The rifles will be inspected, specialty cleaned, tested, and returned as soon as possible.
They are also advising that no owners attempt to diagnose or repair recalled rifles.

Check the bolt head pin. The only way the bolt can come out is when the release lever is turned up so there may be a problem with the pin.
Thanks you for that warning. Would you just not know it, but my only two rifles which survived the boating accident just happened to be subject to this recall: a 22-250 which is spot on as accurate as any I have ever owned, and a 223 which is fine shooting too.

Never buy a used 770 or 700 they are all junk and I sure wouldn’t be letting my kid handle it.

Rem 700, 30-06, 165gr, 2700fps @150 yds. This was my best group of last year. I have a new 20MOA scope rail and am gonna stretch her legs this coming season.
Its been modernized but its the same receiver, barrel AND TRIGGER my dad bought me for $75 when I was 15

Does the 10x1 rifling maintain stability with a larger bullet? I cant see shooting anything bigger than what I have now Swift Scirocco II 165gr . A few have recommended 10x1 but most advice is to go with 14x1 rifling.
24" bull with a real scary looking flash hider. Would love to hang out at the sniper school for a few weeks, but I'm getting too old for that.
I'll have to rely on treachery where my skill lacks.
