The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I sprouted seeds for all these peppers and thought they would never sprout, but they finally did and are now in containers outside. The Fooled You Pepper (Jalapeno without heat) is about 6 inches tall, the rest are shorter, 4-5 inches, but they are all growing and look healthy:
Tangerine Dream Sweet Pepper
Golden Baby Belle Sweet Pepper
Sweet Pickle Pepper
Pepperoncini Hot Pepper
Hot Pepper Mixture

Hi Black Agnes! I haven’t done my weekly report yet, but have been reading through first. What a wonderful tip about the okra!

I obtained some seeds for a few strains of okra I had not tried yet. The only one I did last year that (and it turned out great) was the Clemson Spineless.

This year I bought some Orange Jing, Stelly, and Eagle Pass okra seeds.

I usually try starting my seeds in a sprout tray, transfer them to dirt cups, then finally into their destination pot or plot.

The Clemson and the Orange Jing have all sprouted, but the Stelly and Eagle Pass have just been lumps. Since I only tried to sprout about 5 each, I may try that bleach tip and see what happens. THANKS!

I replanted it. If all the seeds germinate I’ll thin it out.

And that’s one thing I hate doing. I work the land, plant the seeds then have to pull a bunch of them up. ha!

Outdoor violets blooming like never before. As they are my favorite spring flowers, it is heavenly to be surrounded by such beauty. Pansies are blooming well also. Lily of the Valley shoots poking through the ground. Daffy’s are fading but tulips blooming. Huge mosquitos, and I do mean huge are numerous so insect repellant is necessary when ever walking out the door.

/johnny how long do you harden off your plants before planting them in this region? I have a bunch outside now but not shielded from the sun yet—2-3 days before planting I will shade them off. Any suggestions from your end?

I move everything from the sun-window to the cold frame, and then when the cold-frame gets put up, everything is on it's own outside. Some stuff gets put close to the ground where it's warmer, instead of on the potting table, but most everything spends at least 2 weeks outside in cups before going into the big garden.

If that wasn't clear, tell me, and I'll try to explain it better.

.if someone can tell me how to keep the deer away from our flower beds...

A good appetite, and a stealthy manner.

Seriously... if you act like you are hunting them (in a paleolithic way), they will NOT want to hang around.

I try to act casual, and the squirrels avoid my place just on principle.

Ok yo comprende. I’ll leave mine out a little longer then and thanks for the tip. We may get some stormy weather sunday so they will need some covering from the elements.

“I might need some tutoring lessons in the mysteries of pepper growing from you and Eric.”

It's easy. Use 5 oz. paper cups, use ice pick to punch 4 or 5 holes in the bottom of the cups, and punch some around the side close to the bottom of the cup, use Espoma seed starter, place seeds in at depth given on envelope, place in tray with about 1/2 inch or little more, filtered water, or rainwater, in tray. Put under grow lamp with lamp very close to cups. Replace water when tray is empty. Keep lamp on during day and turn off when go to bed.

That is the easy part - now, here is the hard part - every day, stand in front of grow lamp, and wring your hands, day after day thinking they aren't going to grow, repeat wringing hands thinking they aren't going to grow, until one day you see a bit of green. Apply adult beverage (alcohol) into your body until you can't see straight - you got pepper to grow!

I only eat the stupid ones. The smarter ones avoid my place like the plague.

I'm affecting the natural selection of squirrels to make them smarter.

“I’m affecting the natural selection of squirrels to make them smarter.”

Welll, since it’s a scientific natural selection endeavor, eat away.
