Got rid of a 1970's "Home Entertainment Center", and wifey wants a semi-huge screen TV
PS: I’m in a “connectivity desert” here in NM. No sell or broadband, so my picture comes over antenna or of DVD.
You have to turn down the refresh rate during some stuff or you get the dreaded “soap opera effect”, where everything looks too live.
I’ve got my eyes on the Sharp Aquos Quattron Q+ line. It’s a nice semi-future-proof tv because it is capable of accepting 4K signals without the 4K premium price. It also can upconvert 1080p to near 4K quality. The UQ models of this line are also the first LCDs to meet the exacting specifications to earn THX certification.
I’m just waiting on some professional reviews before buying.
Visio LCD. Ours has been a stellar performer for years. Visio is a quality brand.

If you like sports than you want plasma. I have 1-46”Panasonic plasma I bought in 2007 and still works great, & 1 55” Sharp LCD but the picture wasn’t crisp enough, 1 64” Samsung plasma 3D smart tv, and finally 1 47” Vizio LCD smart tv.
The 64” plasma kicks serious ass. So my advice is to go as big as you can get. I think Costco has their 70” LCD for $1700 which is what I paid for my first Panasonic in 07.
A good place to compare and get reviews online is Cnet. After you think you found the one you want start to check all the reviews you can find like at sears or best buy or other online dealers. Then buy...
I've noticed that with some shows. It literally looks like you're THERE! lol I just considered it to be a feature.
I've got a Samsung 46" LCD that I've had for a bit over 3 years now, and I still love it. The picture quality is superb. In fact, when I bought it, it was a part of a "package deal" that Best Buy had going on at the time, and I got the 3D version of the TV & a 3D BluRay player with WiFi, and a WiFi adapter for the TV, all for less that the price of the standard 46" Samsung. The 3D is pretty nifty, but I wear glasses, so it's uncomfortable, and I rarely use it. If I had to get another, Samsung would be my #1 pick (I've got a 32" Samsung LCD in the bedroom that I've had for more than 5 years now), but I would at least look at some other brands.
Check out Best Buy and Nebraska Furniture Mart, if they're nearby, you might be able to pick up something on special, over what you might find at Sam's.

I recently replaced my old DLP TV with an 80” Sharp Series 8 Aquos 3D LED TV, and I could not be happier. It has been a revelation. Images are so sharp that I can see flaws in the actor’s makeup and I can clearly see what was filmed on a sound stage and what was filmed on location. Before choosing Sharp, I read all about how great Samsung was and saw displays at Best Buy that seemed to confirm it. Then one sales person showed me that it all had to do with how the picture was adjusted. Samsung wasn’t any better than Sharp and in the end but cost much more. If you don’t need anything as large as 80”, Sharp has smaller models, but definitely check it out.
I have had my 55 inch Samsung hooked to my computer for over three years, it is never turned off because I use it for TV as well, I run pre-recorded stuff with "Video Lan Commander" anytime I am not actually using either the TV or computer.
The model I have is a smart TV super thin, side lit LED and it has been great, no use for the smart functions though since I use it as a monitor for my Mac. There is no such thing as burn in anymore judging from my experience.

A recent interview at CES 2014 reveals the worst; plasma TVs are gone for good. Following, we analyze the reasons and hope to provide some insight as to why this tragedy happened.

Plasma TVs have obtained our top ranked picture quality ratings other than much more expensive new 4K or OLED TVs for the past 10 years in a row without exception. Granted, picture quality comparisons have gotten closer over the past couple years. Except for the very best LED TVs, Plasma Televisions have trounced LED and LCD TVs in black level, processing speed (Hz rate vs sub field drive on plasma), side angle viewing quality and contrast, and color saturation and rendition. Basically, all of the most important picture quality attributes. The one picture quality trait that is a bit less important is brightness/peak whites with LED TVs dominate in. This last trait does make a difference when viewing the TVs at the store, but not in your living room. < /snip >
I went with my wife to Conn's, and I was blown away in about 30 seconds. We purchased the Sony 65" screen, and I'll pay for it in 2-3 years, simply by not going to any Dallas Cowboy games (it's usually a grand to take the family). Frankly, I've been to my last Cowboys game...it was just an easy way to justify the purchase...lol.
The 3D viewing is awesome (try Jurassic Park and see if you don't jump out of your seat when a Raptor lunges at you).
It was installed the day before my Zags were torched by Arizona. Each of our 21 turnovers were as clear as anything I've ever seen!
They've got great pic quality, but the "heavy, heavy, heavy" part discourages me -- my poor lil' back probably couldn't hump the 50 incher that wifey pines for.

Oh, I totally disagree. Optimal screen size is a function of viewing distance - bigger is not always better. Figure out the right screen size for the actual distance from the screen you will primarily be located.
Our 32" Sony Bravia was purchased when the thin flatscreen LCD's were just getting to be the rage, and we paid nearly 10 times that at Circuit City....at least it's still in perfect condition.
With the little window shopping we've done so far, we've been pleasantly surprised at what 600 bucks or so will fetch.
You're right tho,it is heavy. I think mine weighs in at about 125 lbs. and required a heavy duty wall mount and a buddy to help me pick it up.
As a side note, I got it from Amazon for almost $2,000 cheaper than what I could find locally.
I wouldn't do it again tho because if I would have had to return it I would have been screwed............It's easier to just call the store up and tell them to bring a replacement or fix it.
That goes without saying.......
Right before Christmas I picked up an 50” LG LED on sale for $448 at WalMart. I was shopping for a 40” but this was less than the cost of the 40” at the special buy. That said, I’m so glad I got the 50” and an LG.....awesome picture and great sound.
