Two pit bulls broke through a fence in a Nevada community, entered a neighbor's home through a dog door and killed three dogs inside while the residents were away, animal control officers said.

Jennifer, a resident of the home in the Reno suburb of Spanish Springs returned Friday to find Jill, a black lab, Gucci, a shih tzu, and Buddy a Pekingese dead inside inside the house on Reiger Springs Drive.

The dogs were seized and their owner is facing a citation, said Barry Brode, director of Washoe County Animal Services. The pit bulls could be euthanized if a judge orders it.

Sorry to post something so sad. I have a shih-tzu who protects our home with his little life, and cannot imagine the grief...

In before the it’s not the breed it’s the owners.

BTW, If that happened to my pets, the pit bulls would have been euthanized on the spot.

The problem with pit bulls is that they are like bengal tigers. They make great pets, until they don’t. And when they turn, it’s not the same as a weiner dog turning. It’s a little more impactive to all concerned.

Not that I’m against the dogs. I would just like to see the owners made legally responsible for what they do. And I believe that is already the case.

Pit Bulls are sweet and well-behaved dogs. You do hear about the problem dogs.

The media never reports on owners who never have a problem with their pit bulls. This is Gresham’s Law applied to reporting on animals: bad news drives out good news.

Its unfair to tarnish all pit bulls as being a menace based on the actions of a few rogue dogs.

>>The pit bulls could be euthanized if a judge orders it.

They should have been euthanized already, and regardless of a judge’s order.

If someone’s dog did this to my dog, I would kill their dog immediately. If my own dog did this to another person’s dogs, I would kill my own dog immediately. There is no grey area in my view. Killer dogs have no place.

This was a dog allowed to run loose. Its the owner who should be responsible for the death of the child.

I have a German Shepherd and I never allow her off leash and certainly do not allow her to roam.

Sad to say, there are irresponsible dog owners out there.

I suppose this is not a good time to comment on "situational awareness," which a rational person would accept as a given first and foremost around one's home.

If I had neighbors who own aggressive unsocialized pit bulls next door. A doggy door would be the last thing I would provide to make a disaster not only possible, but likely.
A shotgun would be my first investment.

No further comments would be useful. I am biting my tongue. It could have been worse.

This whole thing defies logic and has been in defiance of logic for a long, long time.

I will not own a dog that bites.

That said, no pit bulls. Not now not ever

And dog doors are a bad idea

Agreed.

With dog ownership comes great responsibility and you are liable and may be held criminally responsible if your dog injures or kills someone.

I love my dog but I know well enough this is a powerful animal.

I have never heard of shih-tzus attacking and killing other dogs. Or attacking and killing children. Or attacking and killing senior citizens. I have, however, heard of Pitbulls doing this on a regular basis.

Sorry, but it IS tghe breed and the instincts that are bred into them.

Just like a retriever will retrieve with little encouragement, a pitbull will kill with little encouragement or training, it is what their instincts tell them to do.

From your link:

32 U.S. dog bite-related fatalities occurred in 2013. Despite being regulated in Military Housing areas and over 700 U.S. cities, pit bulls contributed to 78% (25) of these deaths. Pit bulls make up about 6% of the total U.S. dog population.

All dogs bite. They are carnivores descended from wolves.

We humans must always be the alpha and set strict limits and teach our dogs not to bite.

Its not the breed - its how to owner socializes and trains the dog to be a good canine citizen.

Since you can’t tell for sure which ones are going to turn vicious, that’s a reasonable response.
