Little Mia Derouen, who would have turned 5 next week, died from face and head injuries after the family dog attacked her as she watched TV. Her mom dragged off the beast and barricaded herself and Mia in a bedroom while screaming for help.

A little girl in Louisiana was killed by her family’s pit bull, despite her mother’s frantic efforts to drag away the dog.

Mia Derouen, whose 5th birthday was next week, suffered severe facial, body and head injuries from Tuesday night’s horrendous attack and died at a nearby hospital, Houma Police Chief Todd Duplantis told WWL-TV.

I knew chows could be mean but I didn’t have them figured for #2. I almost adopted a lab/chow mix figuring the lab would take a lot of the agression out but I didn’t becuase the animal was already 6 mo old. I was afraid it might have already developed some agression I would not be able to train out.

There is a normal curve for everything, including IQ of "minoritahs" and for disposition of pit bulls. Any given minoritah/pit bull can fit anywhere on that standard curve, but 99.7% of them are going to be within three standard deviations of that mean.

It's where those three standard deviations lie that is the key.

Great comment.

But I’d add ‘stupid humans’; some people should neither be dog masters or breeders, let alone parents.

With young children in the house, of course it's fun to have a puppy to raise. But I'm not sure it's ever a good idea. It's better if the young dog is old enough to have shown its personality and willingness to follow directions. Then let the young dog and the child meet in a situation where they can interact.

Pit bulls and other breeds that have a self-defense streak often don't work out well with young children. There are exceptions. I made the mistake once with a dog back in the 1970s that had a little too much German Shepard war dog in its DNA. The dog was fine....until it felt threatened.

The last time I looked at our county shelter’s listings, most of the dogs were listed as part: Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, German Shepherd and Lab. Oddly enough, the pictures all revealed short haired dogs with large, broad, thick skulls, short pointed ears, tails with very short hair, etc.

Well, I guess most of my neighbors and I are dangerous dog lovers according to the list-or maybe not. Mastiff breeds are the ranch/country dog-du-jour here, because their bark is scary, they are huge and they make very good guards for livestock and humans alike. A customer’s Bullmastiff drooled all over me yesterday while I fed him treats and petted him...

I’ve been the happy owner of two German Shepherds, a Chow, my current canine companion is a Siberian Husky who is 15 years old and going strong. My daughter’s spoiled dog is an AKC Staffordshire Terrier/Pitbull Terrier-she has had the dog from puppyhood-he is 7 now.

All of our dogs have been registered, and purchased from recommended AKC kennels, except the daughter’s, purchased from a rescue agency after a puppy mill raid. They have all led long, happy lives-the Chow lived to 17-staying indoors with our cats when we are at work, and close beside us when we are outdoors-they are never, ever unsupervised-and I suppose we aren’t either...

No one has ever been bitten/attacked. Do they bark and guard? Certainly-the Chow in particular was very protective of the kids, and me-my Husky likes company a lot more than the others did. All of our dogs were raised with and like cats-my Husky has slept with our cats since we bought her as a puppy-and I’d always been told that breed of dog was a terrible cat killer...

No one I know leaves a kid under 10 or so alone with a dog-any dog-kids lack the restraint and sense of responsibility to deal with animals, unsupervised. People out here don’t leave kids alone with chickens or livestock, either-it is asking for trouble.

I have never seen nor heard of a 130-pound pit. A dog that size has a whole bunch of genes in it that are NOT American Staffordshire Terrier.

“They’re being bred for money, not for quality dogs.”

And that is why I only buy from reputable kennels, taking a year if I must, to save the money for a well bred, show quality dog-we traveled to another state to a reputable kennel for my Husky. Any time there is a heavy demand for a dog breed, careless breeding results, and the worst genetic traits seem to be emphasized.

German Shepherds-my favorite breed-are an example of breeding for money-inbred, increased health problems like hip dysplasia, shortened lifespan, uncertain temperament, etc. I found kennels offering guarantees for both of mine, but their lifespans are so short-12-13 years if you are lucky-that I will likely not buy another.

A pet is not a fashion accessory-it is a living, breathing creature.

Being eaten alive starting at the face, some American children are suffering the most horrible deaths imaginable.

That Aussie in the bottom pic looks just like the one who was part of our family until she died at 15 years-with either an Aussie or that Border Collie, as long as the kid isn’t running, the dog won’t try to herd it...

And those kids aren’t really unsupervised...

130 lbs! I am one of those who believes the breed should be extinct.

“130 lbs... not a ‘pit bull’”

You are correct-more likely one of the Mastiff breeds, like that customer’s brindle Bullmastiff that drooled on my shirt while demanding attention and treats yesterday-at less than a year, he’s near my weight-108. Full grown, he’ll be 120-130 lbs. My daughter’s Pitbull Terrier only weighs 55-60 lbs. That other dog sounds more like a Mastiff with cropped ears...

When will people realize this breed is a breed of violent maniacal killers? If breeds were religions, pitbulls would be muslims.

RIP

...they are the only dogs available at the local pound.

Last October we went to our local county shelter to check out dogs to adopt. Our shelter has 50 cages for dogs and they were all full with only six dogs that were not Pit Bulls. The next county south of us had about the same ratio.

Our local shelter had a German Sheppard/Hound mix that we adopted and she is one of the sweetest animals we have ever been around.
