With a title like that, I thought it might have been about Catherine the Great.

The Duellists, Ridley Scott's first film. Absolutely beautiful. Called the "best film you never saw" since it only opened in about a dozen theaters.

_The_Godfather_ and _The_Deer_Hunter_ both just don't work for me. The latter is indeed too pretentious, what with the heroprotagonist trying to shoot himself in the head repeatedly with a 1/6 chance that never materializes (and, IIRC, does not attribute survival to the only thing that could overcome such insane odds: a sentient higher power that cares). The former is similar but, well, more refined about it. Both, however, are just done with what I suppose are Italian sensibilities that I just fail to grasp, what with wallowing in the mundane as though something profound were happening therein - I suppose there is, yet...there isn't.

For many years I’d heard about _Deliverance_, usually in the company of men who referenced it in a darkly joking manner, chuckled nervously, and then changed the subject as though something truly horrible were being avoided. I long wondered why so many men have found this movie deeply disturbing. Having now seen it, I understand: it brilliantly shows how easily the male ego can be horribly crushed, and how easily one can die stupidly. Perhaps it is a rare movie that shows men the fear women are familiar with.
For the last decade my wife has been tempted to watch it, just to discover what I did about it. While I agree it’s well done, it’s deeply disturbing and not something you want ingrained in your subconscious.

_The_Duellists_: very good indeed. Great debut by a great director.

Good pick, Deliverance is one of the most memorable movies ever and awesome music to boot. Deliverance is one of the few movies that at least for me, can scare.

_Zardoz_ was astoundingly bad. Only redeeming feature was the bizarre, but insightful, scene of filmed eating as pornography.

I've read the novel Deliverance and saw the movie. But I never really understood the homo-eroticism until I was a grown man.
The book goes into great detail about the Burt Reynolds character's muscled arms and sinewed chest.
The movie goes one better.
It's probably the gayest movie of the 70s without coming out and slapping you across the face.
I'd wager that 99% of the 1972 audience didn't pick up on that theme, though.
They were plenty uncomfortable, but didn't really grasp why it bothered them so much.
Someone from 2014 would see it plain as day.

Some one must have mentioned "Midnight Express", I like "Two Mules" but admit it's probably not a top 25 caliber movie.
and are you sure your list is complete??
Nothing says the '70s like ...
And of course, that movie can't really sway the critics who are looking at some pretty solid movies and actors.
