Dad calls cops to teach 19-year-old son a lesson, cops kill the kid
Daily Caller ^ | 11/08/2013 | Robby Soave

After 19-year-old Tyler Comstock quarreled with his father and drove off in his truck, the elder Comstock decided to teach him a lesson by reporting the truck to the police as stolen.

Soon after, cops chased down Tyler and shot him to death — despite receiving orders from dispatch to cease their pursuit.

On Monday, an argument broke out between Tyler and his father, James Comstock, who refused to buy his son a pack of cigarettes. Tyler stormed off and left in his father’s truck, which is owned by a lawn care company.

Cops pursued Tyler to the nearby Iowa State University campus in Ames, Iowa. During the chase, Comstock rammed a police vehicle at least once, according to reports.

Still, a recently released audio file revealed that dispatchers twice instructed police to stop following Comstock. The officers did not obey.

The truck eventually came to a stop in the middle of campus property, at which point police ordered Comstock to turn off the engine. Instead, the 19-year-old revved it, prompting Ames Police Officer Adam McPherson to fire six shots into the truck. Two of them hit Comstock, killing him at the scene.

The kid learned his lesson I guess.

I expect he won't do that again...

Um, no they didn’t “order Comstock to turn off the engine”. This is kinda old news and has already been posted. Several times.

Why ram a cop car and rev and engine when asked to turn it off?

I don't know, maybe because you're angry, upset and not thinking clearly? "Ramming" a police car sounds serious but could have been something as simple as trading paint on the doors during the chase.

Why shoot the driver of a stopped vehicle? Lots of other options - try blocking it in. Shoot out the tires and engine first (rather than the driver)... If these cops are too afraid to do their jobs properly, resorting to shooting suspects as a first option, then they ought to find another line of work.

Wow!

I don’t know why the police didn’t just try to shoot out his tires. But, then again, I have never been in their situation.

After watching that, it looks like they shot first and asked questions later. I heard the dispatch say, “back off”.
The cam didn’t show what movements the driver made prior to being shot but the report said he revved the engine and was not armed.

I know the young man's attitude has changed, I wonder if his father's attitude has changed.

You can't fix stupid.

Is it possible that one of the rammings by the cops bashed the kid’s head into the driver’s side window and disoriented him?

The whole thing looked panicky and weird.

With a trailer on truck the driver starts to drive recklessly, then the first stop they run and make a high speed turn with a trailer.
At 1:12 he continues to swerve and then stops the vehicle. Goes in reverse and then rams the police car with the trailer. (IMO RIP right there).
Chase continues as things go flying out of the back of the trailer.
He continues to swerve recklessly with the driving. At 1:37 he runs through an intersection on a red light with traffic flowing against him. Only by the grace of God was no one hurt on that one. (RIP #2) Just reviewed, someone hit the trailer and knocked it right off the truck. (RIP #3) I not at this point for the safety of the public see the police stopping till this guy is apprehended. NO WAY!
At 2:00 someone was told to back off, but there was already multi-felony occurrences videoed on the police cam.
At 2:07 the vehicle and trailer blows another stop sign while being pursued by the police (felony #? at this point).

Horrible situation, having seen the video I feel bad for the dad, but the police did the right thing. This son of his was a maniac on the road. Even lost the trailer while at speed into another car.

This one isn't a case of bad policing IMO.

And now there’s no witness to gainsay their version of the event, is there?

Look at the video. This person was such a major problem on the road and even sent his trailer into another car for a collision at an intersection he blew.

He earned a possible RIP if need be due to their actions at least two times or more.
Generations ago people would have respected police and just pulled over, not play road warrior.

Would love to know this youths history of drug use though. No one NORMAL does that kind of behavior or driving IMO. Something was off.

Just proves the adage that “there is no bad situation that can’t be made worse by involving cops.” Good work, Dad.

Because the cops witness at least two high felony actions behind the wheel of the car and the driver was a danger to everyone at that point.
At one point the trailer of the car gets whacked off by another car when the driver blew a red light through an intersection at high speed.
I don’t know how an officer could back off legally on that.

Yeah, just the video of all the occurring felonies.

I’d love to see if there was a blood test on this kid.

I have a 15 year old son at home, and I would be devastated if that were to ever happen to him.

After I could set some of the emotion aside and then look at the situation though I would have to admit that my son was an idiot who carried almost all the blame that day, and I don’t think I could continue to fault the police for the outcome.
