Big Rig Tips Over, Temporarily Shuts Down Highway 101

Highway 101 in Redwood City was temporarily shut down Friday morning after a big rig tipped over the center divide.

At about 10:50 a.m., a big rig traveling northbound on the freeway, just south of Woodside Avenue, veered left and crashed into the center divide, tipping over, according to Art Montiel of the California Highway Patrol.

A YouTube video (shown below) from a limousine dash camera shows the big rig traveling in the No. 3 lane, when it suddenly made a hard left turn crossing over into the No. 1 lane. It appears the driver attempted to steady the truck when it entered the No. 1 lane, but the momentum of the hard turn forced the trailer to crash into the center divide and tip over.

It is unknown at this time why the driver of the truck veered to the left, Montiel said. The driver was not injured, and drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played a factor.

Six other vehicles were also damaged during the incident.

Both directions of the freeway were completely shut down as emergency crews responded to the scene. A large tow truck and a crane were called in to upend the big rig, Montiel said.

The freeway completely reopened in both directions at 1:40 p.m.

As if 101 needs any help to stay gridlocked.

101 is bad, but the worst road in the SF Bay is 880 between Oakland and San Jose.

Journalists can't even get the name of a major throughfare right. It's Woodside Road, not Avenue.

I actually got in a wreck on the SB exit of Woodside Rd. back in 1990, so I know that area quite well.
