Vanity- input on various treatments for Crohn's

Greetings! I know there are freepers who have knowledge and experience in just about any area of interest, so I figured we could gather some info/input from you on various treatments/ success stories for Crohn's. I did a search and various interesting articles have been posted, perhaps some of you have other useful links you could share.

Over a year ago our youngest was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. Not that there is ever a good time to become ill, but this has impacted her studies and immediate University plans.

She has been under the care of a physician who has both taught and worked at John Hopkins, and is considered very knowledgeable in this field. We have gone through the typical program of scheduled treatments, none have had any effect. She is now self administering a biological, Humira.

So far nothing has helped... Pain management is the most difficult to accomplish. At this point we are open to alternative treatments etc. She is seeing an acupuncturist which her Physician also recommended for pain management. Her Gastro Doctor has also had her try various dietary changes which she strictly adhered to including FODMAPS None have brought any relief. We are considering trying the Gaps diet, as it has helped restore gut health for many people.

Dr. Wyckoff cured my daughter who almost died of an intestinal ailment 25 other doctors could not diagnose. He is in remission from Chron’s and specializes in gastro-intestinal issues. Drwyckoff.com

I hope you are able to find help soon.

PS. Both Asacol/LIALDA and Entocort are expensive.

They do that with the C-Dif infection now. It does save people’s lives.

If all the standard treatments fail, look up Helminthic Therapy.

If you get it under control, here is a good website about probiotic food and maintaining a good bacteria balance in teh gut:

I drink quite a bit of kefir. You can find it at Aldi’s and Trader Joes. Way more bacteria strains than simple yogurt.

You got that about the Walmart oil. Last time I was in, surprisingly they had started carrying “coconut sugar” which is an alternative sweetener.

10 years ago I was diagnosed w/ UC by two doctors. Was prescribed meds. Struggled a lot with many debilitating symptoms. Nine months ago discovered it was mis-diagnosed — instead, celiac’s disease. Latest colonoscopy? Perfect. No scarring. No polyps. No more problems.

Sorry that your daughter and your family have to deal with this.

Crohn's/colitis = Inflammatory Bowel Disease. There is a Crohn's forum, http://www.crohnsforum.com/ - which you might find helpful.

Also recommend a google search on "leaky gut syndrome;" Wikipedia's info on this is good.

Not sure about "reversible" but people can go into remission for long periods of time. Drugs can do wonders for some people with Crohn's, others have little luck with them. Many people try holistic/alternative medicine. Some feel better by undergoing drastic dietary changes (no flour/no sugar, for example). The one thing I've found in learning about this condition, is that everyone's case is different, not all Crohn's sufferers have exactly the same symptoms, triggers, or respond to the same treatment.

I will look it up, I have some colloidal silver at home but I’m not sure if what you’re talking about is more of a homeopathic solution. Thanks!!!

I’m following Eat to live aka fat-free vegan, and so my daughter who is home with us again basically is stuck eating my super healthy diet. On occasion she does eat other things outside the house, but no dairy and minimal meat.

We switched to coconut spread instead of butter or margarine...well she eats it, I don’t use any fats. But yes, in the past I’ve found coconut oil is great if you’ve got any sort of virus. Just plop a tablespoon into some tea :)

I will check her vitamins. We recently switched to liquid vitamins as they are more readily absorbed.

We began this journey suspecting it was Coeliac.. as she was demonstrating many of the same symptoms. So gluten was one of the first things we eliminated. I can’t say that it had any effect. In fact, we continued to stay off of gluten once she began following the fodmap diet.

She was tested specifically for gluten, all negative including the genetic marker.
