Don’t Be Alarmed by the Drone Blimps Hovering Over D.C. They’re Here to Stop Cruise Missiles

If America is attacked, we might be saved by blimps. No, not state-of-the-art jet fighters that can fly well beyond the speed of sound. But blimps: lumbering, relatively jovial blimps—the manatees of aviation. Within a year, a pair of souped-up $2.7 billion blimps (price includes R&D) will be floated 10,000 feet above the District of Columbia and act as a 340-mile-wide eye in the sky, detecting incoming missiles and the like.

Ummm, don’t we already have multiple multi-$Billion satellites in low-Earth orbit for the same thing??

Can't detect low-flying cruise missiles in real time with them.

Despite the nonsense you see in the movies, with a low-earth satellite at best for any given spot on the ground you get a brief (minutes long) look at it every few days. Even a huge number of satellites still only allows you to see a given area part of a day. You don't get a continuous movie.

Incoming missles my achin azz...

There are a number of potentially hostile countries that could easily strike DC with sea-launched cruise missiles. Our existing radars and satellites have limited to no capability to detect them.

I keep forgetting we're not supposed to care about National Security on FR, though, anymore.

2.7 BILLION Dollars for a Blimp??

Most of the money is for the extremely sophisticated sensors (radars, etc.) and the communications gear to transmit that information, not the Blimp itself, of course.

‘They’ could re-coup some of the $$ by using them as sightseeing tours and/or placing ads on them.

$500,000 for each blimp itself, $1.3 billion for the camera’s that can zoom in through the cracks in your blinds, and track your infrared through the walls.

Obviously the people in DC are getting very paranoid about citizens. One could wonder why.

There's been a huge blimp flying around over the Baltimore area the past couple of days. I saw it yesterday afternoon/evening over the west side of the beltway (695), and again this morning in the sky closer to downtown Baltimore.

There are earlier reports from February about a Raytheon surveillance blimp coming "soon" to Aberdeen Proving Grounds NE of Baltimore for testing, but I don't know if this is the same, or some commercial blimp. There were no obvious markings on the blimp (from a distance anyway), and I can't find any local DC/Baltimore report about these blimps and what they might be from the past couple of days.

Anyone know?
