I agree with him entirely.

I told my kids I didn't care if they went. It was up to them. And up to them to pay their own way.

Ironically, my eldest homeschooled daughter wants to teach at a Catholic school, so she needs her "piece of paper," as I described a "worthless education degree" to her. I also told her that if any professor pulls any crap, I told her to tell him off in whatever colorful language she chooses. And I'll back her up 100%.

Better to fight on your feet than on your knees.

I know that Glenn isn't everyone's cup of tea. He has his flaws, as we all do.

But this kind of thing impresses the hell out of me.

I do not agree with him. There are valuable fields such as engineering and medicine where ideology is rarely even on the menu for discussion, and formal training is required. Besides, he shouldn’t raise children who are scared to be confronted by liberals. It will tune their critical thinking and debate skills.

The problem here in “Conservative Alabama” is the old links of community to school, tradition, and athletics. I like football too but its time to admit that the University of Alabama is more and more like the University of Calcutta with a strong dose of Berkeley and Brandeis thrown in. There is next-to-nothing of the great Southern culture of Alabama being taught there.

The only things conservative in Tuscaloosa are a few student groups.

This whole college degree thing has gotten out of hand. Sure, I can see people who want to be doctors or lawyers needing them but it’s gotten to the point where ever simple job requires a degree in order to advance.

There are some people who certainly should go...*must* go...to college. Those aspiring to become physicians or engineers are two groups that come quickly to mind. But in my family, for example,I have a nephew who has a $150K diploma under his belt in “film editing”.In the two years since his graduation he's earned about $20K and has spent thousands in commuting costs alone to get to a from that job.College education,to a very large degree, has become one massive scam in the last 30-40 years...a scam engineered by the likes of Bill Ayers & Pals.

Strip the taxpayer funding from colleges and watch them get better. As it is now we send kids to college out of some misguided belief that all need to be there when the reality is that only a fraction of kids should go to college.

The result is that we have colleges full of students and professors with nothing better to do than promote the marxist party line. This means that the students who do belong in college suffer from having to slog through that swamp struggling to learn rather than excelling and becoming tomorrow's scientists, engineers, and doctors.

Our money would be better spend on trade schools and apprenticeships teaching tomorrows builders and makers.

Mike Rowe gave one of the single best speeches I've ever seen on what America needs a few years ago.

Mike Rowe on Discovery, Realization and Lamb Castration

Very highly educated Rowe realizes that PETA doesn't always get it right, regulation isn't always wise, and laughing at blue collar workers has damaged our country.

Would be cheaper to just send them to China or North Korea, learn all about
Communism much cheaper.

“...so she needs her “piece of paper,” as I described a “worthless education degree” to her...”

One of the really bad decisions of my life was getting a Masters in Education with an endorsement in History (and a total of 18 Grad hours in History) instead of just going for a PhD in History. The higher degree would have only taken a year longer and it would not have been tainted by the College of Education.

In a prep school I was certified to teach history but wound up teaching English and Spanish. To have gained certification in Spanish I would not only have to take lots of Spanish courses (a reasonable requirement) but I would have once again been forced to take College of Education pedagogy courses specific to foreign languages.

The teaching methods course are based on quack junk research. The new methods are not producing good results.

Here's a good college:

Thomas Aquinas College.

Seriously. Get a doggone education. Go to trade school later.

If you major in the hard sciences, math, physics engineering, you will get very little politcal BS pandering. Even the most flamming liberal marxist physics teacher can’t alter the laws of physics.

Doesnt anyone remember it?

Good article/thread on common core

Bill and Melinda Gates: Controlling Population and Public Education

… The Common Core Standards were developed by an organization called Achieve, and the National Governors Association—both of which were funded by the Gates Foundation. The standards have been imposed on the states without any field testing, and little or no input from those involved in implementing the standards.

… “Fact-based” books on climate change are also replacing classic works of literature because they are viewed as offering students an opportunity to learn “science.”

… Freakonomics—a book that has already been a favorite of public school teachers—is preferable to Poe because students will learn about the positive effects of abortion on reducing crime rates by reducing the population of those more likely to commit crime.

I have lived in a time when electronic engineering was still a Moses Mountain thing.

Today, the kids that I have witnessed in college, and those that have graduated college, should have been held back in thier junior high school years.

We, as a society, still have needs for mechanics, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, HVAC, and those skilled in metal working. The world of electronics have become so meaningless, as to the ‘gee-whiz’ factor, that going to college for electronics, has no brass ring, anymore.

I still do believe that high schools, should, if they do not, be made into trade schools, with meeting general education requirements, and, with three or four years on-hand training and certification in a trade. This would be a boon to local society, for they would have a local trained workforce, to meet the needs of local society. It would be honest work, good work, with enough of a pay scale to support the now-high-school-graduate. Those that cannot cut it in a trade school ... there’s always the infantry.
