I do not agree with him. There are valuable fields such as engineering and medicine where ideology is rarely even on the menu for discussion, and formal training is required. Besides, he shouldn’t raise children who are scared to be confronted by liberals. It will tune their critical thinking and debate skills.

But it’s also not that he’s worried his kids will be indoctrinated.

Even if there’s a field at a college such as engineering or medicine.. all he’s saying is he doesn’t want his money sent to that college while they employ people of other fields who are indoctrinating students.

You have a point with the hard sciences. But even there, is it really necessary? Yes, I know that businesses use degrees as a filter, but isn't it possible to learn engineering on your own?

I went to engineering school, and if I had gone through a modularized, on-line curriculum, I think I could have gained the equivalent knowlege in 2-3 years.

A better system would be to have private certifying agencies, that would certify "professional engineers," etc. They would be incentivized to test skills that employers are interested in, and to make sure that things were on the level. Cheating scandals would put their companies out of business.

People could shop for colleges that had grads who successfully passed these exams. And poor people could pass these tests without even attending college.

This way, people would have an incentive to actually learn rather than punch a clock at a school. Yes, that even happens at engineering school.

As a former college professor I have to disagree with Glenn. First some colleges are worse than others. No I would not not fund 4 four years at Occidental, Columbia, Harvard, USC, Fla Atlantic etc. I also would not make the costly mistake of letting my progeny talk me into paying extra for a Univ out of state. Most of the time its a waste of money.

But there are many good State Universities and are they left leaning? Yes somewhat but if your child has been raised to know whats what then they should be able to tell when they are being zoomed by some professor and either mentally dismiss it and move on or speak up. I challenged a couple of lefty morons during my under grad stint at FSU.

There is no substitute for a well rounded education and thats what you get at a 4 year university. If you want to be in certain careers its a must. If money is no object send your kid to a private christian university.

That being said in the current economic climate and with the Muslim-Marxist entrenched in the Whitehouse for 4 more years I would steer my child to a technical school where they can learn a good skill set and get a good paying job right out of the chute.

I agree, it depends on the degree. Also, I don’t think taxpayers should subsidize any studies that aren’t related to employment. If someone wants to study about gender, race, socialism etc. let them pay for it.

There are some wonderful options. My kids went to Huntington U in Indiana, Taylor in Indiana and my daughter will be starting Grove City College in PA in the fall.

I’m especially excited about Grove City. They accept NO government funds at all, and thus can teach without their influence.
