Gamers on a tablet?
Probably multiple chips hosting multiple cores on the same card. In that case, Intel will seek to control their cooling behavior and ship it in an integrated 'cassette' like unit as they did with the Pentium '2'.
IF they ever come up with a decent keyboard on a laptop, I’ll buy one...but all I can find is those mushy, rubbery, “soft touch” keyboards.
After learning to type on an old Underwood Manual, and they typing for years on an IBM Selectric, I like a little travel, and a little “click” in my keyboard.
On the other hand, I can just see journalists and people in corporations, writers, etc., doing stories and reports on an I-Pad.
does this mean I will no longer be able to build my own tower from scratch?
If so, it really sucks.
It sounds to me like this is not so much “end of the desktop PC” as it is “end of the removable CPU”. Just another step in the evolution that has brought us from the days when a PC wouldn’t work without an array of cards plugged into ISA slots.
Higher integration of the CPU onto the mobo isn’t going to preclude someone from packaging it up as a desktop if they want to. It will just look a lot like a laptop inside a bigger case. Expansion is all going to be via USB and DisplayPort anyhow so I see this as a non-story, just as when they started integrating other bits and pieces of the traditional PC.
I used towers for years so I could get enough speed and memory at reasonable cost.
But I went over to using a laptop on my desk quite a while ago, when they got enough speed and memory for what I do.
I also usually bought one level down from the fastest models, for cost reasons. But now I don’t even have to do that.
But I need a keyboard. No touch screen for me.
We’re tending towards providing laptops with docking stations in the office for staff. Best of both worlds…
For me, this is scary. I trade stocks and options for my income in retirement. I have a tower with 4 monitors right now. I just can’t do what I do on a laptop or tablet. If I were trapped at a hospital and had to trade one option or a single stock, maybe I could get it done in an orderly manor, but to try and watch 7-10 stocks with options streaming and streaming charts to match, it just can’t be done on one screen. I guess I can collect trash from the dumpster to keep my system running, but I don’t want to. I do have many used parts in my system right now, but that was just to save money from buying new parts. If I can’t even get them, I will be stuck in the ‘80’s forever.

It seems as if Intel goes to a new socket design (new CPU requires new mobo) about every eighteen months. So for any homebuilder who builds a new PC less frequently than that, new CPU=new mobo is practically a reality right now.
Woo hoo! AMD (and who the hell knows, maybe even Cypress) arises from the ashes like the Phoenix!
I know we’ve seen stuff like this already, but I have been told that a major player is putting together a modular system built around a tablet computer.
Desktop configuration has tablet being placed in a stand. Monitor connects to the stand. Keyboard is wireless. Tablet in stand on desk acts like a track pad. Programs can change the function of the tablet/track pad - can instantly change from just a track pad to a combination track pay/numeric key pad when using a spreadsheet, for instance.
Laptop configuration is adding a cover that is also a keyboard (like the Surface). Keyboard also has ports for connecting external storage, printer, mouse, etc.
Main feature is that the tablet is the computer, so you can take your work, programs, etc., with you on the go - no syncing necessary.
This has sort of been done with a cell phone, but it was so under powered that it wasn’t practical. Laptops have sort of done this with docking stations, but this will be seamless and with the “instant on” of tablets, using it will quickly become second nature. The new system will also be compatible with your current home HDTV and will really add some surprising functionality to a new oversized “monitor” soon to be released by this same company.
For those who guess who this player is (I promised I wouldn’t say) and think that their current tablets aren’t powerful enough, this is planned for no sooner than the next generation tablet, possibly the one after, and may (just may) have an Intel chip inside.
What about the heat? The tablet case is a heat sink. Metal feels kind of weird.
Battery life? Newly developed tech that intelligently uses power only when needed coupled with next-gen Li-imide technology which far outlasts current lithium ion batteries.

It is only about cpu upgrade. Only a very tiny amount of enthusiasts bother with cpu upgrade anymore anyway.
