Jesus was born years earlier than thought, claims Pope
Telegraph UK ^

The 'mistake' was made by a sixth century monk known as Dionysius Exiguus or in English Dennis the Small, the 85-year-old pontiff claims in the book 'Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives', published on Wednesday.

"The calculation of the beginning of our calendar – based on the birth of Jesus – was made by Dionysius Exiguus, who made a mistake in his calculations by several years," the Pope writes in the book, which went on sale around the world with an initial print run of a million copies.

Even if true ... why bring it up?

Jesus and Christianity are already under attack, why add doubt to the mix.

Stupid move.

This isn’t exactly news. It’s well known that Herod didn’t rule in year 1 AD.

I never gave it much thought.

I believe Jesus is (and was), is the Son of God, And His birth, though miraculous through a virgin, can't compare to His resurrection.

THAT'S the highlight and crux of Christianity.

Jesus was probably not born on December 25 either.

Though Christians had adopted that date by A.D. 336, Christ was born “when shepherds watched their flocks by night.” In other words, most likely in the spring. And no, He wasn’t born in the year A.D.

The Bible tells us that Herod the Great ruled Palestine when Jesus was born, and Herod died in 4 B.C.—so Jesus had to have been born not long before that.

Yep, Blame Dionysiuys Exiguus for this one—he’s the sixth century monk who came up with the idea of splitting history into A.D. and B.C. He just chose the wrong date to do so, that’s all.

IL PAPA was not speaking ex-cathedra on this issue.

but what about my authentic Roman coin from Jerusalem with a mint date of “2 BC” on it? Does this mean it should have been given a date of 1 AD?

You're right... The Church certainly shouldn't be encouraging intelligent, evidence-based discourse, curiosity, the study of historical records, or the exercise of our facilty of reasoning.

Instead, they should have hushed it up... maybe gotten rid of or otherwise silenced those already "in the know." The Church was always good at that.

It’s amazing to me, of those who call themselves Christians or Messianic Jews, few have a clue of his actual date of birth or even crucifixion.

Many would be shocked to learn what they're really celebrating each Christmas and Easter!

Yeshua (Jesus isn't a Hebrew word) was born on Tishri 15, 3999.

"It's been surmised for a very long time that Jesus was born before 1AD so technically we may well be living in 2007 or 2008 or whatever - no one knows for sure."

So, maybe we have not even reached Y2K yet and that is why nothing happened back then with the computers! Gasp. It could happen any time now!! /s

And isn’t calling a person Dennis “the Small” a sign of “heightist” discrimination? (joking)

The book is not an ex-cathedra pronouncement. This Pope is more inclined to make statements and books outside of his capacity as Pope than PJPII, for example. It is not bad, but it does confuse the media and people like you.

Do you understand the distinction between the Pope's ordinary speech or writing, like this, and ex cathedra pronouncements? It doesn't seem so.
