Thank you O’ “Great Bird of the Galaxy”
ST was on Friday nights, 10PM..and was almost cancelled after a few months. However, it was easy to tell that it was gonna be a huge hit. It was my sophmore year of college, and on Friday nights, my fraternity would have an open house...a few kegs, bags of chips, and girls from all over the city would drop in..However, at 10pm, the juke boxd was turned off, and we all sat/stood around watching ST on the tube..
Great series. I own every season of every incarnation except for Deep Space Nine.
I saw it. I was five years old, and the salt monster impressed me greatly.
Nanu, nanu...or whatever.
In retrospect the series was great for several reasons.
1) Mister Scott convinced an entire generation of nerds to become engineers. Seriously, he is given as their most popular reason for having studied engineering. Several of the gizmos designed for the show were inspiring enough to eventually be turned into real things.
2) Their sense of fashion was amazing, due to costume designer Bill Theiss, whose theory was “the degree to which a costume is considered sexy is directly proportional to how much it looks like it is about to fall off.” (Yes, he died of AIDS). They also had three talented hairstylists, and one of their designs was so unique it was named after the Star Trek character (Yeoman Rand). Even the men’s hairstyles, especially the sideburns, became popular.
3) They actually got some scripts from serious science fiction authors. Instead of just relying on typical Wagon Train type script hacks. This lent enough color to really make parts of the series unforgettable.
I thought he died a few years back. Only 46?
