"It’s averaging about 110 in the shade here in the city (Phoenix area), and that kind of heat island usually wrings whatever water there is out of the air."

There's water in the air in Phoenix? Who knew?

Speaking of things meteorological and in terms of degrees (at least probabilistically), check out this little true-life ditty:

Yesterday, as the family was preparing for dinner, we had a large pot filled with near-boiling water and ears of freshly-shucked corn. At this point, Mrs. Jetsome announced that it was time to walk our five dogs.

My daughter wanted to leave the stove burner on, on low, while we were away from the house, arguing that that way the corn would be done by the time we got back from our short walk.

I pointed up the danger of having a pot of boiling anything on the stove unattended, ever, and especially in a seismic zone where a large earthquake could strike at any time.

She pointed out that the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 was a once-every-1200-year event and was unlikely to recur anytime soon, so it would probably be cool to leave the pot alone on the lit stove for a few minutes.

I pointed out to her that there is no predicting when an earthquake will strike, and that one could happen "tomorrow."

We had a 5.4 magnitude tremblor near our area today that was enough to tumble items from store shelves at a retail outlet I happened to be checking out of at the time.

I resisted the urge to rub her nose in it when I came home today. Mostly.

Should I buy a lotto ticket now? Take out a second policy?

Wow, I’m so glad you were careful!!!
You take the high road.
I love saying “I told you so.” It’s a character flaw. We don’t leave the crockpot, the dehumidifier, or anything extra on when we leave the house because I’m afraid of potential electrical fires that will injure/kill our animals if we crack up the car and can’t get back. Fortunately, Mr. Sg is of the same mind.

Wow. I don’t leave pots boiling, either, but earthquakes don’t often cross my mind.

I do need to cook some corn this afternoon, though.
