Geraldo Rivera’s son: I’m ‘ashamed’ of my father’s remarks about Trayvon Martin and his hoodie

Rivera created a firestorm earlier this week when he argued the hoodie the unarmed teen chose to wear when he was killed in Florida was as much to blame for his death as the man that shot him

Even Geraldo Rivera's son is disappointed in his father's controversial remarks about Trayvon Martin.

"My own son just wrote to say he's ashamed of my position," the Fox News contributor tweeted on Friday.

Rivera created a firestorm earlier this week when he argued the hoodie the unarmed teen chose to wear when he was killed in Florida was as much to blame for his death as the man that shot him.

Despite his own family's harsh criticism, Rivera refused to budge on his position, adding on Twitter "Still I feel parents must do whatever they can to keep their kids safe."

Rivera elaborated on his 32-year-old son's shame to Politico.

"Gabriel broke my heart…He just told me for the first time in his life he's ashamed," he told the political website, adding his son told him he had "gone viral for all the wrong reasons."

Rivera said he wrote Gabriel back and tried to explain his position that "every hoodie should come with a warning like cigarettes, 'caution wearing this could get you killed.'"

Martin, 17, was shot and killed Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla. He was returning home from a trip to a convenience store when neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman started following the teen, telling police dispatchers that he looked suspicious.

Agree with you! My first thought would be the same, until I get more information that proves otherwise, such as getting closer, looking at the person sufficiently close, perhaps briefly talking to them, have they traveled this route before, crime in the area, weather conditions, commonly traveled by other ppl to get to the store, etc.

I’m sure Cosby doesn’t think the hoodie is a smart garment for black teenagers to be wearing. But I’m sure he sympathizes with the black family of this boy - as he has every right to do. He’s been great on so many issues concerning black America - a hero in my view.

Getting back to style and image, I remember the woman in a burqa who went into an upscale Paris shop and got punched out by an upscale Parisienne who had a problem with chicks wearing burqas. Must say, I enjoyed that little sartorial mistake!

I believe that is a photo of him when he was 12. There is another thread on FR and this was his most recent photo on Facebook: Photobucket

There’s another clue I always look for when I’m walking down the street in NYC - is the guy in the hoodie walking quickly with purpose in his step - or is he walking slowly, looking at people, and generally seeming not to have a destination? That’s another thing I’m wondering about in this Zimmerman mess.

"Sorry, I’ve seen too many of those things worn by criminals that the mere sight of one gives me the shivers."

When I see someone wearing one of these is when I get the shivers.

So many things to be ashamed of if Geraldo’s your father - but he picks THIS one?

By itself, I thought it was one more sensible remarks to get rotation.

I don't get this whole conversation. A hoodie is very common piece of apparel. I've never thought of a hoodie as racial unless the rest of the ensemble made it oblivious.
I go to alot of outdoor sporting events and when the weather calls for it, a good majority of the crowd has their hoodies up. This is just plain stupid! IMHO

I think you are right mm. We live in a rural area and ALL my kids and grandkids wear them. We have a lot of wind here and they are great for keeping the wind off your head.

“Hoodies are just bad news, no matter where or when they are worn and no matter who is wearing the hoodie.
Law enforcement officials such as policemen and neighborhood watch captains should almost always question those who are wearing a hoodie.”

This was a “gated community” as initially reported on the news.

What is a big guy in a Hoodie doing in a Gated Community??

The News initially said ... There had been break-ins by “Young Black” males recently

This volunteer security guard should have not chased him; but, it states that he is going to the second exit in this gated community..... Also initially reported this young man had his hand in his waistband.... This is often a signal “I have a Gun”...... This volunteer security guard is being linched in the media.......... Obama said if he had a son he would look like “Trayvon” this is feul on the fire!!!!

The fact is, you don’t see hoodies that much in Florida — too hot. I agree Geraldo is OK on this one.

I’m just an ooooold redneck, but in THAT photo, Trayvon does not look at all dangerous. In fact, he DOES look like Zero......he looks like a sissified pantywaist pussy.

If that Neighborhood Watch guy wanted to blow somebody away just for the helluvit, he should have at least chosen an individual who LOOKS mean and threatening, wouldn’t ya’ think?!

My Lord! He tries to justify “self-defense” against THAT weepy, wimpy-looking little twerp?! I’m not a judge, but if I were, and he were in MY court, he wouldn’t have a leg to stand on!

Hey there. Yes, wearing hoodies in Orlando and/or Miami seems a bit strange to me. Plus, Florida is unusually warm for this time of year.

That question still has not been answered?

You would think that there would be more outrage about the fact that “a big black guy” was in a gated community.
