2012 GOP Ticket: Pawlenty/Barbour. Thoughts?
FReepers Opinions | 4/22/11 | Recovering_Democrat

Looking at the electoral field, I wonder if this would be the strongest ticket from the current field. TP is a 2 term governor from a normally blue Northern state, Haley is a 2 term governor from a red southern state.

They have lots of executive experience, TP has shown he can win in a non-Republican state, and just might be able to put together more than 270 electoral votes....if we can put the keebosh on Hussein's fraud machine.

Good point, but I don’t think you can really count Cheney or Bush; after all their Congressional tenures were long gone by the time they were .picked.

Maybe, because of your point, the running-mate should be a former congressman.

I am going to take your comment in the best possible light, because frankly it seems a bit snarky. Thanks for the info: my opinion is that the data you provided is the best thing, or one of the best things about FR.

No one can be expected to have all info relevant to the topic....that is why we discuss issues and ideas.

Minnesota nice T-Paw lacks the fire and passion that the GOP base craves this year, while Barbour is burdened by service as a lobbyist and potential ties to segregationist groups.

You left out one—Nelson Rockefeller. Of course he was never elected to the Vice Presidency, but neither was Ford.

No thanks. Just not what I had in mind. By the way that duo won’t fly in today’s world. Now in 1955 you have a winner there.

Dumbest idea ever. Pawlenty couldnt fire up a campaign if his life depended on it, and a slow talking, old white guy from Mississippi running against a black man would be just what the libs ordered. Get your head outa your behinds folks. Its obvious some are on a frantic search for the miracle ticket thats ANYBODY but Palin. Please!!! Its Palin or nobody as far as Im concerned.

I’m sorry for being snarky, but I just find this kind of thinking to be incredibly flawed. It’s the reason that candidates like Romney are even the least bit competitive. All the ‘on paper’ electoral vote matchup nonsense is for wonks in classrooms who never deal in the real world.

Once we free ourselves and stop all of the calculations and nuances, we can get down to picking the BEST candidate rather than the one who can win on paper. McCain was a great ‘on paper’ candidate. That didn’t get us anywhere.

You’re correct. From now on, here is the stat. that I’ll use: The last four GOP VP’s were congressmen, Dick Cheney, Dan Quayle, George H.W. Bush, and Gerald Ford.

I am feelin’ a lot of love for Palin right now. But she really has not announced herself as a candidate. Tim has announced. Haley has not, but he may soon.

I just think we need to deal with real candidates who have announced. I like Herman Cain very much, and he HAS announced....Huck, Sarah, Newt are all in the TBD status still.

Then you better pray she runs because so far the only thing I can see with what is running is four more years of Obama.

I'm sorry, but that combination sounds as exciting as a mayonnaise sandwich. I do not trust Pawlenty - he has tried to be too cute recently. Don't know much about Barbour.

No biggie...I merely want to discuss the idea. Your facts threw in some food for thought.

Few seemed to think the facts I pointed out had any merit whatsoever, though. I think they’re something to think about.

Unfortunately, this is a big disadvantage about internet discussion boards—they’re often less *discussion* and more flaming and open disdain for anyone who thinks even a bit differently. Not much flexibility. And like it or not, real life REQUIRES flexibility: in marriages, in worklife, and (gasp!) politics. :)

Heck, even the federalists/anti-federalists had to find common ground when putting together our Republic!

Regarding your info about TP not carrying a majority: was he an UNpopular governor? Did he have a Republican legislature? (I’m betting he didn’t.)

I haven’t stayed on top of his Global Warming nonsense—how deep in that water did he wade? Were his “solutions” market based or AlGore Commie-style/Crony Capitalism crap?

Thanks again for your respectful thoughts. :)

RD

I hope you’ll not sit at home if SP decides she won’t run.
