We’re gonna have to agree to disagree on this one.
She wouldnt be precedent for this. She was the last remaining of something, and honored because of that. She was honored because of her actions, not the longevity of her life.
There is precedent for non-political figures, but there have only been four in the US History, not counting Generals.
There's no precedent for that. Did the last living Spanish-American war vet lay in state? The last living Civil War Vet? Last living Mexican War Veteran? Etc., etc. Why would we start now? Is World War I more important than the civil war?
Scroll up. I posted precedent.
Go here for a list of those who have lain in state in the US capital

Looks like I’m a little late. A couple of FReepers already beat me to the draw on this.
You posted precedent for unknown soliders to lay in state in the capitol. Frank Buckles is not unknown and the focus would be on him, rather than “every” World War I vet. There is no precedent to have soliders lay in state simply because they outlived everyone else, and it makes no sense to give Buckles this honor when no previous war veteran was honored for outliving everyone else. Why is he more special than say, Albert Woolson, the last surviving vet of the civil war? Woolson died in ‘56, and didn’t lay in state.
I understand your point(s), guys; really do. Again, don’t misunderstand. I believe the guy should be honored as we would and SHOULD honor any who served our country in time of war (including three of my own sons, by the way). I can think of many heroes, some highly decorated and some not, who gave their all (including their lives) for us in hell holes all over this world. Not all of them are given the honor of lying in state. Patton didn’t. Jimmy Doolittle didn’t. Omar Bradley...Halsey....Audie Murphy....an endless list.
They may all DESERVE it out of respect, but it’s impractical. Lying in state is generally reserved for a head of state. That’s all.
While true, WWI was “the war to end all wars”; it was when gas attacks were widely used (by all sides).
I’m a vet, I get it - but the LAST veteran of ANY war is a chance to honor EVERY veteran of that war. Most don’t get a chance to honor ANY veteran.
But, you know what, just my opinion - and just like as$holes, everyone’s got one, and they usually smell like poop.
He is the last of the WW1 vets. That’s a BFD. Presidents come and go all the time. there will never be another last remaining WW1 veteran ever in American history; furthermore, lying in state is not specifically reserved for Presidents. This is about honoring the spirits of every WW1 vet and basically closing that chapter of US history. It’s about national closure. It’s also about our WW2 vets. There needs to be a national moment of recognition over this.

Yes I do comprehend it. My grandfather served in WWI. You see, I got it right, WWI.
I mean no disrespect to any vet. I do not mean to elevate those who lie in state at the capital above them. But I would rather his memorial be a military, not a political event.
I might pay $5.00 to see Queen SJL jump in front of the cameras honoring the last WWI veteran. That would be material for Michael Berry for the next month alone!
