Still getting goose bumps from Scully
The Press-Enterprise (Riverside, CA) ^ | July 18, 2009 | Jim Alexander

I'm sure Vin Scully hears the question constantly, and I'm equally sure he always handles it with his characteristic grace.

It's a question without a definite answer. How long will the fans of Southern California, spoiled beyond recognition by his elegant play-by-play descriptions, continue to enjoy his presence in the Dodgers TV booth?

“He’s the last of a breed in another sense, too, continuing to work solo. To those who have grown up accustomed to multiple voices in the booth and might consider this an anachronism, I respond: Why would you rather have two guys gabbing with each other instead of one talking directly to you, the listener?”

The problem I have with most of the 2-man and 3-man baseball broadcasting teams today is the constant joke telling, poking fun at each other, giggling, and commenting on topics unrelated to the game at hand (”Hey Joe, you’ll never guess who I ran into the other day. Your old high school baseball coach! He said to say hi.”). When I was growing up in central California, I listened to the Oakland A’s games on the radio, and their play-by-play announcer was Monte Moore. He usually worked alone in the booth, and it was wonderful to listen to.

I wish I had a recording, or even a transcript, of Scully’s introduction to the first nighttime playoff game at Wrigley field. As the camera from the blimp zoomed in on the ballpark with the lights on, Scully narrated an opening to the broadcast which was pure poetry.

He is truly an artist.

Marine Pilot WWII & Korean War vet Col. Jerry Coleman
and Yankee player.

And former New Yorker Ted Leitner have been the radio broadcasters for the S.D. Padres for around 29 years.

Harry Kalas, Harry Caray, Jack Buck, Vin Scully. All of them were great, and at a time baseball was great--before the 1994 strike.

Don't forget two of the best ever ... the ol' Redbird himself, Red Barber, and the great Ernie Harwell.

Padres.... Booooo.

This is a Dodgers thread, and they are HOT this year.
Vin Scully is a living legend, a delightful person and walking encylopedia of baseball lore.
WE LOVE HIM!!!

Vin Scully is a study in smooth and effortless announcing. There are very few that good.

BASEBALL PING LIST

If you would like to be on the ping list let me know.

This will be a medium volume ping list during the baseball season and a low volume ping list when all life stops in late October.

I grew up with Pete, Ernie and Skip announcing the Braves games. To me they did a wonderful job and I really enjoyed listening to the Braves on the radio. And back then it was better to listen on the radio because if you watched on the television it was just a bunch of empty seats at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. Better to listen on the radio and imagine a stadium full of fans.

Love The Colonel and Uncle Teddy.

Cannot stand the yahoos on CH 4, this year, or in recent years past. When I watch the Pads, I listen to radio broadcast.

But, Vin Scully is the best. I grew up a Dodger fan in socal, Ventura County, and always enjoyed listening to Vin.

What makes Scully so amazing is that between games he landed an Airbus in the Hudson River.

Actually the best is the NY Yankee’s Michael Kay and anyone with him. He’s especially good when Paul O’Neil is in the booth. It’s almost better to listen than watch.
