Drought Means Great Grapes for Winemakers (MD grape harvest best quality in 5 years)

ALLEN, Md. (AP) - This summer's drought has withered corn stalks and punished soybean plants across Maryland, but at least one crop is thriving in the hot, dry weather: grapes.

Maryland vintners say this year's grape harvest could be the highest quality in five years.

"Wineries across the state are telling me this is a great year, like none we have had in recent times," Kevin Atticks, executive director of the Maryland Wineries Association, told The (Salisbury) Daily Times. Atticks' group represents 27 licensed wineries.

The grape harvest is now underway and lasts through October.

Here, let me pop another cork

Say what Trader Joe specials have you found to be good deals?

We’ve just about finished off all the Night Owl 2004 Shiraz and started on the Rosemount Shiraz.

These were both less than $5/bottle wines competing with $20 in quality. (The Night Owl if kept for another 20 probably would fetch $100/bottle, nice runs, few people heard of it,..but they’re all out of stock now, I believe.)

TJs might have 100 bottles of $5 minus priced wines, but many are last shipping container values with some $3/bottle wines with $20 value.

What your best finds?

Not sure if Trader Joe’s carries it, but Crane Lake is great as table wine or for every day use. Sometimes you can get it for 4 bucks a bottle and IMO it compares to some $20 quality wine

I had a bottle of 2004 Crane Lake Petite Sirah not long ago. I was pleasantly surprised. It had a very nice taste with a good finish. It was also cheap.

I have never had an MD wine before. What are they known for? I am near the Finger Lakes region of NY. We have great whites but I can’t find a red that I like.

“That’s the Spirit!” ping!

Maryland wines expected to be excellent! Who’s going to buy me some?

A good, reasonable wine is the Folie a Deaux Menage a Trois red which goes for about $7.00 a bottle. I had a Sebastiani Merlot, Sonoma County 2002 that was absolutely wonderful, but pricier. Rex Goliath Merlot or Cab Sauv is good. Cline Red Truck is nice, also. Trinchero is usully very good no matter what varietal you go for.

When I saw the title, I immediately thought Mad Dog 20-20 for some reason. Then I realized it was about Maryland wine.

There sure is a lot of wine being produced these days.

I like the wine and I fantasize about being alone for 10,000 years with every bottle of wine ever produced, every book ever written and an MP3 of every piece of music ever composed.

After those 10,000 years, I'll be the most well-read, well-cultured and drunkest person who ever lived.

Would 10,000 years be enough time however to consume all that stuff? Well, maybe I'll just be selective and stick to the good stuff.

“In a good year the wine makes itself.”

Makes me want to go out and get a small bottle of red wine to go with my steak tonight. A good ‘ol NC home grown.

Well - not one of those silly little one gulp shot bottles.

I had in mind something between that and the gallon jugs.

;-)
