Israel to publish first list of Holocaust victims' assets

The Company for Locating and Retrieving Assets of People who were Killed in the Holocaust intends to publish a list of properties and invite heirs of the victims to claim them.

However, the banks have refused to cooperate with the company and transfer the accounts of Holocaust victims' to it. Two MKs from the Knesset's Constitution, Law and Justice Committee yesterday threatened to petition the High Court of Justice to force the banks to return the money to the Holocaust victims' heirs.

The company's acting head, Yishai Amrami, said a list of some 500 lots, some 50 apartments and NIS 60 million in various bank accounts, is to be released in two weeks. This will be the first publication of a list of Holocaust victims' assets that have been held in Israel.

Can anyone please explain how Israeli banks came to have the property of Holocaust victims who died in Europe and never lived in Israel? And how does this property include lots and apartments in Israel? Is this related in any way to German reparations to Holocaust survivors and victims' families?

There seems to be something missing in the article regarding the historical background of this dispute between the victims' families and the Israeli banks.

I don’t think there’s all that much involved, but the saddest part is that these were assets purchased/deposited during the mandate period, from what became Israeli institutions.

I believe in this case they’re either bank deposits or property in Israel (then Palestine under the British Mandate) owned by victims. It’s very similar to the various European institutions that settled a few years ago. In many cases, without a death certificate, accounts and death benefits couldn’t be claimed, after all just because someone’s father went passed through the gate at Auschwitz, doesn’t mean he’s not living the high life today in the Caribbean. In many instances heirs simply had no way of knowing what parents or relatives owned, and for decades refused to provide the identities of account, policy, or land holders. I believe most of these fall in the latter class.

Also, don't be afraid to email any of this places with questions like that. I've emailed a few research facilities and museums in reference to WW2 since I started reading books by Edwin Black. They can't offer up enough information to you. They want expanded awareness and are thorough in responses. That has been my consistant experience with 5 different places so far.
