Jon Benet Ramsey in Daisy Dukes
Townhall.com ^ | 8/4/06 | Mike S. Adams

In the nearly ten years since Jon Benet Ramsey’s death, I’ve spent little time pondering the identity of that little girl’s murderer. I’ve known the answer to that question for years. And so have you. But one time several years ago - during the height of the media coverage of the case - I did hear one interesting assertion about the parents of Jon Benet Ramsey; namely, that there was absolutely no evidence they had ever sexually abused their little girl.

When I heard the assertion that there was “absolutely no evidence” of sexual abuse of Jon Benet Ramsey, I immediately recalled a picture of the little girl when she was around the age of four. She was wearing a brightly colored strapless dress that matched her brightly colored lipstick. Her makeup was as heavy as that of any hooker or drag queen in San Francisco.

This begs a fundamental question: Are we sexually abusing our little girls when we dress them up to look like prostitutes? Of course, I would submit that we are.

Fortunately, when the Ramsey case broke it was very unusual to see a couple dressing a small child like a hooker. Unfortunately, today it is commonplace. An episode I witnessed the other day illustrates just how little parents seem to think before allowing their little girls to dress and carry themselves in an entirely-too-adult fashion.

On my daily jog though my neighborhood I ran by the house of a man I know fairly well. His garage door was open and music was blaring out of a jam box inside - in fact, the music was so loud it was barely recognizable. But I could tell the song was “These boots are made for walking,” which was popularized by Nancy Sinatra in the 1960s. His two grandchildren were dancing in the driveway to the recent remake of the tune, sung by Jessica Simpson.

As my neighbor’s two grandchildren were standing in the driveway - while gyrating their hips like a couple of prostitutes - I noticed they were both wearing cutoff “Daisy Duke” style short and halter tops. The oldest girl looked like she was wearing mascara. She is 11 years old, by the way. Her younger sister is nine.

There is obviously something very wrong psychologically with the parent who actually dresses a four year old girl like a prostitute. There is also something wrong with the parent who allows a nine or even an eleven year old girl to dress herself like one – not to mention carry herself like one, too. It is not cute. It is simply crude and indecent.

But there is more to the equation than bad taste, here. In today’s world, people who do not make sure their little girls are dressed like little girls are exposing them to extreme danger.

Shortly after I finished my afternoon jog, I went to one of the numerous websites (http://www.mapsexoffenders.com/) that can be used to locate registered sex offenders. I wanted to know how far those two little girls – the ones dancing like hookers - were from the nearest convicted pedophile. The answer: about 500 yards.

Parents of small children (especially little girls) need to do the following things after finishing this short but important column:

Log on to the internet and find the nearest registered sex offenders in your neighborhood.

Make sure you voice your complaints to local retailers who sell sexually provocative clothes marketed for little girls.

Make a note of the names of the companies that manufacture inappropriate clothing for children next time you see these products. Write them and tell them exactly why you will never, ever buy their products.

Tune in occasionally to The O’Reilly Factor to keep track of Bill’s segments on Jessica’s law – a measure designed to impose mandatory 25-year sentences on first-time child molesters.

Make sure that your lawmakers know you will not support them unless they support Jessica’s Law. In other words, impose a simple ideological litmus test on all of your representatives.

I hope all of my readers will give serious consideration to the advice I have proffered today. Even if you reject some of my specific points, keep my general thesis in mind. Our little girls will be women far sooner than we would like. For the time being we should just let them be little girls.

I still wonder if it was her brother who abused and killed her and their parents were protecting him.

Now if there was only one person living in the zip code, I'd start to get worried.

I'll bet I'm not the only one who went to the website for tracking sex offenders and bookmarked it.

Found three within a two-block radius.

I've always thought the same thing - the 19-year old brother.

I suspect that your suspicions are correct, but there is no way to prove it. However, if the suspicions were correct, Patsy suffered far more dying of cancer than she ever would having been incarcerated in some cushy lock-up. Perhaps justice was served by a higher entity.

What I am concerned with is a one strike and you are in jail for 25 years.

Particularly in this day and age when women falsely accuse men of abusing children as part of their strategy to win custody rights or deny visitation rights.

I have no sympathy for true child molesters but if one day daddy is made to change the diapers and the next day daddy is arrested for touching their child's privates (how are you going to do a good job of cleaning the child if you aren't wiping them in sensitive areas?), I don't see where that justifies an automatic 25 at San Quentin.

Not a particularly well written article, but it brings up a topic that tends to get swept under the carpet: the widespread sexual exploitation of children.

My personal opinion is that immodest dress in children reflects the underlying values and morals (or lack thereof) of the parents. What end is achieved by allowing a 9 year old to wear a skimpy outfit? What specifically are you trying to facilitate?

Actions often speak louder than words, and I really, really, really don't like the message that parents are sending. Remember, it's the parents who not only allow the clothes to be worn, but who purchase them in the first place.

I started this battle 5 years ago. I am raising my granddaughter who is now 14. I couldn't believe my eyes when I started shopping for her then. I walked out of Kohl's after seeing the slogans on little girl's underwear and tees. I explained my moves to her then. We came home and wrote to Kohl's protesting their clothing selections, especially since their PR come-on was that they sold classic, conservative apparel. Now that she is older, and has FULLY developed, the task of buying clothes is even more difficult. There have been a few "knock-down drag-outs" with her but she will not win this battle. She rarely even asks for halters or belly shirts because she knows my answer has been and will be no. Thank God, this year she is going to private school and will wear uniforms. I have never had a more pleasant school clothes shopping experience.Every parent ought to push for uniforms. If nothing else, they are hassle enders.

Are we sexually abusing our little girls when we dress them up to look like prostitutes?

One day, my husband and I were having dinner at a Mexican restaurant on Olive Ave in Fresno. They had Spanish TV on and we were SHOCKED beyond belief at what we saw. It was kind of like a talent show. Mexican parents entered their little girls in this contest to see which one could move and look the most sexy - they were bumping and grinding right up there like the pro's. These little girls were around 5 and 6 years old. The parents were beaming as they proudly watched their little girls act like sex-starved seducers! It was the most disgusting display I have ever seen. To this day, it makes me sick to think about it.

Call me politically incorrect but those Mexican parents made us sick!!!!!

One thing I don't like is when I see little girls/and older girls with words written on the butt portion of their pants.

"As far as rape, I thought everyone knew that rape is about violence, not sex."

No, everyone doesn't know that. There are a number of motives for rape including sex and dominance. Rape is not a crime committed just to be "violent", although violence is often part of rapes committed for sex, dominance and even revenge.

I remember having these fights with my mother and clothing wasn't nearly as bad then. Thing is, I got around it when I had to wear what she wanted me to. Skirts can be rolled over at the top to be made shorter. You can wear a different shirt underneath and just whip off the undesired one when you get to school or wherever. I remember my Mom making me wear these really lame boots to school. I just kept a pair of tennis shoes in my locker and changed when I got there. If parents can find a middle ground with their kids it's better than forcing them to wear something they absolutely hate. I tell my daughter what my Dad use to say, "Don't advertise if you ain't sellin'."

As far as rape, I thought everyone knew that rape is about violence, not sex.

I respectfully disagree with this particular broad brush.

I don't know of anyone who "dances like a prostitute

I chaperoned one of the school dances last school year. These were just middle school kids. I had a headache after a night of keeping kids from grinding on each other or discouraging the young ladies from shaking their tails so hard I thought there butts were going to fly off. I kept a good eye on my daughter though making sure she wasn't dancing like a hootchie. I got hit in the head with chicken nuggets and dodged ice and endured because someone has to watch these kids.

The sentences for child molesters is too light. Usually their history has been first molesting building to murder.
Even with mistakes made in wrong convictions, it is better for society to have the wrongly convicted go through appeals that for one child to be murdered. By the way 25 yrs. is usually not really 25 yrs.

If a husband chooses the wrong woman to marry, that is still not important enough to lessen sentences of first time offenders. Sorry, if that sounds cold blooded.
