Hello,
I'm planning a trip to Dallas in the next couple of weeks. I know nothing about Dallas so I am relying on your collective experience to help me out.
I plan on making a trip to Dealy Plaza and visit the 6th Floor Museum. Not much of an itinerary but that is what I got.
I plan on being there on a weekday afternoon, spend one full day and fly out the next day.
Looks like Dallas Fort Worth Airport will be my starting point.
Any suggestions on motel/hotel places to stay-no AirBNB, good tourist places to visit during the day?
Any good places to eat, places to avoid? I don't plan on going anywhere after dark.
Does Dealy plaza have a post office so i can mail post cards to family and friends if I can find post cards?
Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.
I confess, as long as I have lived here, I’ve gone to downtown San Antonio, much more than I have downtown Dallas (other than for work) and Fort Worth.

Agree 100%. The John Wayne experience in the heart of the Stockyards is a must. Fantastic. If you have time, take in the rodeo. The OP didn’t say their age, sex, etc. so kinda hard to make any meaningful recommendations - - but certainly going to Ft. Worth over Dallas is the best suggestion.

Be aware there is a train that runs between Dallas and Fort Worth, with stops at various towns (commuters) and I recommend Grapevine as your base. Has nice hotel at the stop and great Tex-Med restaurants.
Grapevine is the mid-point between Dallas and Fort Worth, gives you options.

I visited Dallas in 1969. Went to Dealy Plaza and Jack Ruby’s strip club.
DFW train from the airport and points between. Taxi/uber works best. You will spend a couple hours getting to the rental lots. DFW huge—total size is about the same size of Massachusetts.
Don’t get on the freeway or you’ll get lost forever and your family will never see you again but if you do you better keep up with the drivers in front of you because you’ll be roadkill. They’re going at least 100 mph. Go on it at your own risk! 😂

Public transit from DFW is either a shuttle bus from the terminal to the TRE Centerpoint station Departs terminal B lower level near gate 47 - catch the inside the airport shuttle bus from other terminals to B, or if you don’t have to exit security to get luggage, the inside security train is a better bet - two stops in each terminal) or the Yellow line from Terminal A - near the north end). The TexRail station is at the north end of Terminal B. Yellow line is light rail, TRE and TexRail are heavy rail.
For the 6th Floor museum, you want the West End stop on the Yellow line; from the TRE you’d either get off at Victory Station and switch to the Yellow line, or get off at Union station and either hike back to the 6th floor museum, or switch to the Red line back to the West End station. There are restaurants in the West End district near the west end station.
Other museums/activities in the downtown area - The Old Red Courthouse (on Dealy Plaza) has a museum. Heading east from there is a plaza that contains a reconstruction of a log cabin and the Kennedy Memorial. Not much to see at either of those. Heading west from the West End station, along the light rail lines (away from Union Station) you get to Thanksgiving Square (which is a triangle) between the Akard and St. Paul stations. There’s a Hilton Garden Inn on the south side of Thanksgiving Square - may be the most affordable option downtown. A bunch of restauarants a block south of there between Elm and Main streets.
AVOID: Deep Elum. Fair Park except during daylight hours - Green line. Interesting if you like Art Deco architecture.
To see: from a block north of the St. Paul station; you can catch an antique trolley for a loop through the uptown area. A mix of restaurants and bars along the way - tell the driver what you are looking for and get recommendations. Keep an eye on the last car time if you do it at night. Sometimes there is live entertainment at the Klyde Warren plaza on the trolley route. Other things of interest (a bit of a hike from the trolley - the Perot Museum. Pricey but interesting. The aquarium (pricey, I’ve been told it is interesting, never been).
Not accessible by public transit - Old City Park - a restored Victorian neighborhood. It’s where the Jewish merchants lived in that era.
Red line south - Dallas Zoo. Nice, but not outstanding. Exit the zoo station. Don’t get off at any other stations on the south Red line. Zoo is across the street from the station. If you like modern architecture, Dallas City hall (an upside down triangle) is probably a must-see.

We rented a car when we were in Dallas/Ft Worth a couple years ago. Iirc, the rental car company paid the tolls up front and then billed us later for them.
Dallas is the most un Texan of the big cities. . .
Ft Worth has shopping, museums, opera, shows, plus it’s close to a big city.
I did live in North Dallas for a while, Farmers Branch, but I prefer other areas. But then, I’m a small town kid.
Funny enough, I Google mapped it after I posted to you, because I wanted to be sure I wasn't misleading you out too far from the city. It looks like there are six of them surrounding the metro area, but I'm from Denver so I don't know which would be the easiest to get to. I went to the one that was northwest of the city and it was the first one I'd been to. Really enjoyed it!
It was years ago, but at The Fairmont Dallas, I had one of the biggest and best steaks I ever had.
Go to the Arboretum and drive around White Rock Lake.
Northpark is one of the first malls, and it is still beautiful to walk around. I like going to grab break fast at Le Madeline or Corner bakery and walking to see the ducks and turtles in front of Niemans.
only a few public places left where you can enjoy yourself without some feral humans ruining it.
Consider the Hyatt Regency by the Reunion Tower. Really nice hotel albeit perhaps a little pricey for some. A 10 minute walk to Dealey Plaza.
