ATF has a New “Straw Man”, the Unlicensed Gun Dealer

The Department of Justice has issued a press release showing that, over five years, from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2021, the number of firearms sold by unlicensed dealers in the USA was less than 1 of 10,000 sold in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s adjusted calculations during the five-year period, the number of firearms sold through the NICS system was 14 million in 2017, 13.5 million in 2018, 13.6 million in 2019, 21.1 million in 2020, and 18.5 million in 2021, for a total of 80.7 million over five years.

The number of firearms sold by unlicensed dealers during the same five-year period was 68,388 firearms. They were uncovered in 3,403 cases. 68,388 may sound like a great deal, but it is less than 1 firearm for every 10,000 legally sold through the NICS system, or .084%.

The Justice Department prefers to use the term “trafficked.” It may be more correct because some of the firearms may be traded or gifted rather than sold. Of the 68,388 firearms “trafficked” by unlicensed dealers, there were 368 cases where the firearms were used in shootings. There were 265 cases where they were used in homicides. This is over the entire five-year period. The press release gives us cases, but a case might involve more than one or more firearms. It is not clear if a case would involve more than one homicide, but it is possible. The vast majority of the cases of unlicensed firearms dealing, 58%, involved a mean of 2.3 firearms, the number of firearms recovered ranging from one to five.

There is little to indicate the investigation of the unlicensed sales prevented any homicides or any violent crime.

The resources spend pursuing "unlicensed dealers" also known as private sellers, and on keeping a gun tracing system, are wasted resources.

As I get older the question is how do I reduce my collection without running afoul of the law? I had always thought gun shows were my best bet. Now I am unsure. How do I know a prospective buyer isn’t an ATF agent entrapping me? My kids have no interest in guns whatsoever. I suppose I could just die and let them do whatever with them.

I'm getting old but I'm open to being adopted.

Would a continuous barrage of scary statistics be forthcoming were the unconstitutional BATFE to not exist?

You might be able to find their reason for existence on their home page. https://www.atf.gov/about/diversity

Then again, maybe not, as I don’t see continual harassment of law abiding citizens as one of the reasons for being.

“unlicensed dealer” === scare term for “citizen”

“trafficked” == scare term for “sold”

I put mine on consignment at a local gun store. Their fee was 15% of the sale price. Maybe there is one near you that would do that.

Just this bit of information is staggering. If we started at 300 million firearms in the US (and it took us over 200 years to get to that poiint), this is about a 25% increase in just five years. It's as if people think they might need to defend themselves against something, or something.

Hey, the more the Demoncrats get their way about controlling peoples right to own guns the more the Southern Border will open up for illegal guns coming into the country.

There is no bigger “unlicensed dealer” than Eric Holder, the former U.S. Attorney General who trafficked weapons to cartels and blamed it on innocent U.S. citizens.

I have bought and sold on Gunbroker. It's a relatively easy process. If you sell a long gun, you can use the USPS. They allow private citizens to ship through them. You ship it to the buyer's FFL. Their FFL does the background check and the buyer has to fill out the 4473. That complies with all of Big Brother's demands.

If you sell a handgun, you simply find a local FFL to ship. IIRC, neither UPS nor FEDEX allows private citizens to ship handguns through them anymore. My FFL charges $40 to ship and the buyer pays those fees.

Otherwise, you can join any one of a dozen gun forums and post your guns through their classifieds. Then follow the above protocol.

This reminds me of the story of the guy in Arkansas (CEO of the Bill and Hillary International Airport) who was murdered by ATF agents recently. Other than here and presumably in the Little Rock local media, the story got no media attention. I don’t think it was even talked about on Fox. Wasn’t the reason they targeted him was that he was selling guns in a way they didn’t approve of?

We are not likely to hear the rest of the story, because another citizen has gone to his reward a wee bit earlier than might have been because of the actions of that much beloved unconstitutional Federal agency the BATFE.

Agree the more they to take away guns the bigger the black market gets.

Bonus Round: They have no idea how much tax money they are
losing.

The percentage of firearms sold by unlicensed dealers at the time the Second Amendment was added to the Constitution was 100%.

Exactly correct. The insane idea that the federal government has the power to regulate all commerce in the United States, is crazy.
