FReeper looking for advice on moving to South Carolina, preferably Charleston
6/1/2023 | wastedyears

Okay, so I want to leave NYC; my friend moved there a year and a half ago, and I went to visit him last summer. The place is gorgeous, and the city proper was beautiful.

I was thinking of applying to state government jobs (sue me), as they might be easier to get into versus looking at Indeed, where lots of things want an associate's degree. I want to get out of the security industry and go back into an office, which is where I'm comfortable. I'm not asking for a job or apartment on here, but I'm just looking for your average administrative work. Basic, standard stuff.

Anybody that lives in South Carolina, do you have any advice to offer? Neighborhoods to avoid, resources to help? Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Georgia is better. South Carolina is pretty leftist.

Both SC Senators are “bachelors”. So be careful of the water

Charleston is nice, but it depends on the money you want to spend. You can live on the cheap 15-20 miles inland from the city, but the city itself is pretty expensive and the college kids are everywhere.

You might do better getting a state job in Columbia and living in Lexington county.

What are you smoking? SC is far more RIGHT than Georgia.

Charleston has some lefties but so does all cities. Greenville, where I live, is one of the most Conservative counties in the country and always in the best place to live lists. We are the belt buckle of the bible belt.

Lefties my butt...lol

"Georgia is better."

Yeah, they're only looking to indict President Trump. Move there.

I don’t live in South Carolina but my sister lived there in Columbia for many years and I worked for a company that was based in Columbia, South Carolina for over 20 years. I’ve visited often. I wanted to move to Charleston very badly. Of course I couldn’t afford the Battery area which is wonderful but I did find that West Ashley at the time was quite affordable and very close to the Battery area and Folly Beach.
I ended up rejecting the idea after a lot of research because the cost of flood insurance was huge.
I did not want to live in Columbia mostly because heat and humidity are pretty unbearable in the summer, with no sea breeze.

Great place as long as you have a bassboat...
There are other reasons, as well, but not as important...

Don't. all the things you are leaving in new york have already moved here ahead of you.

" the place was gorgeous" .. Lol. yes it is, but you have to deal with horrible drivers that turned charleston into the NJP, You will not arrive anywhere without avoiding at least one collision. And I will Re-warn you, all your horrible NJ, NYC, Philly,Pittsburg, and New haven jerks have moved here ,and if they aint here, they are coming on vacation from may- october.

one more point, the new homes in s.c. are being built on swamps and land that was never suitable for building, do to being on a flood plain. but all that suddenly went away when developers became county commissioner or planner.$$$$ talks,

your flooded home, oh well. its an act of God or a once in a century storm.. we've only have 5 of them this century...no insurance payments unless you have flood insurance, youre living on a flood plain or in a swamp. and the sun here is a 12 compared to you beloved 8 in New York. and its very humid.

Charleston City and the surrounding areas such as Mt. Pleasant and Daniel Islabd are some of the most expensive housing markets in the country. Good luck finding anything under a million dollars. Isle of Palms abd Sullivans Island are in the stratosphere. Charleston is also very crowded because it became very popular very quickly with people moving there from all over the world. City of Charleston has been Democrat City Council for hundreds of years. The surrounding areas are conservative but with the influx of people that is changing. Beautiful place though.

Never lived there, but for many yars visited two or three times each summer. Loved it but I no longer travel that far from home.

Had I lived there, I would have died long ago from over eating. The best food in the US...and I have tried a lot of them, when I traveled most of the US.

A lot has changed in the last 25 years and I suspect the dame is true of Charleston.

“I’m just looking for your average administrative work.”

Atlanta, Georgia has a lot of large corporations.

Charleston is now a rich folks’ resting place. It will be sort of like coastal Florida economically.

Expect lots of restaurant, retail and other low-paid work. Most of the well-paid work be in medical care and the building-related trades. There will be some government work. Paralegal work with some paralegal education would be available.

I fled deep blue Ct to paradise in SC 10 years ago. SC is a wonderful place to live. The weather food, and people are wonderful. There are mountains in the high country and great beaches in the low country. SC is a solidly red state.

Charleston is a great place to visit but it is congested and has the problems of other urban areas (not as severe as NY) As in blue states, there are state, county and local government jobs to choose from.

GA has two far left wing senators and suspect elections. ATL is GA’s Philadelphia. So corrupt. Georgians have strange accents that make them very hard to understand. Sounds like Chinese to me.

WHOOOOHO ... just hold the horses and bite the bit there boys

“move to Georgia” ?

I think you guys might be trying to punk this poor guy.

Do you have any idea what sort of people live in Georgia?
Have you ever seen the documentary “Deliverance” ?
One of the most in-depth, well researched , detailed expose of life in the Georgia suburbs... truly a must see.

And then there is the process of getting a visa, going through the multiple background checks, interviews etc... that can take years.
Coming from new york will be even tougher.. it's not like your just coming to the U.S. from mexico.

Not to mention all the things your required to bring with you
3 gun minimum ... and that's per person (kids under 6 exempt)
1 deer mount at least 8 point ... or a really good story
2 American flags.
1 old dog
1 good attitude
1 bad attitude
1 really good sense of humor (no metro weenie jokes)
1 love of God
1 love of your neighbor
1 love of County
1 case of beer (optional... but no bud light .. ever)
Now this is just part of the list.. you would have to formally submit your application to get the rest..

My advise would be to move some where closer to Georgia , a place that you could sort of dip your toe in slowly.
Some place a little less on the spectrum... like
South Carolina .. then after time ... perhaps .. if you make it there , well maybe.

The tourist part is very safe and I used to visit the place a lot.

Much of the surrounding area is very low income. I never had the slightest trouble.

My mother looked at living on one of the barrier islands but a “monkey house” on stilts was not her style.

Yea! Greenville put whites on their Juneteenth celebration banners. I thought that was pretty good.
