Mom's Refusal to Give Up Her First Class Airplane Seat Has People Talking
WanderWisdom ^ | Oce 20, 2022 | Nicole Pomarico

We're on her side!

If you've taken a few flights in your life, there's a good chance that at some point, another passenger has asked to switch seats with you. Sometimes, it's totally worth it to sit somewhere else so a family can be together. Other times — when it would mean leaving a truly amazing seat in first class — it makes sense to say no way.

In a video she shared on TikTok, @maresasd explained that she was asked to move from her first class seat on a plane. And honestly, her response is something a lot of travelers (and fellow parents) out there are going to relate to.

Over footage of her sitting in her plane seat looking rather smug, she wrote, "I am not a villain for not moving from the seat in first class I paid full fare for. I am also a mom so it's called planning ahead."

Judging by her caption, it sounds like another family asked her to move so they could all sit together, and she said no. And truly — more power to her! She did plan ahead and gets to enjoy the seat she paid for, especially if it meant she'd have to leave first class, case closed.

Many people in the comments are on her side. "I don’t give up my seat anywhere ever on a plane. I reserved it early enough to get what I wanted. Your loss if you didn’t," one person wrote.

We just hope this mom enjoyed her time in first class. If she was traveling without her kids, it was probably like a vacation in itself!

Two years ago my daughter (age 7) and I were upgraded to 1st Class, opposite sides, different rows. I was blessed in that one person changed to let us sit together.

That said, if I was in a 1st class aisle seat, I would not change to a window on a long flight (senior bladder). However, I would change to another aisle seat to help (and have do so many times).

Part of me thinks the mother might have bought a cheaper ticket for her daughter, so she can save money by guilt tripping a higher paying passenger in sitting where her daughter was going to sit.

I would be willing to switch if the reason is medically related or if the airline was willing to refund me my difference and it wasn’t too long a flight.

I guess this sad family could have offered their first class seats to a family in coach, you know, if they REALLY wanted to sit together…

I’m astounded this is a thing now. Leave it to a liberal to try to get something for nothing.

I had a mom ask me to give up my isle seat in exchange for a middle seat so she could sit next to her kid. I told her no. I hate the middle seat. She rolled her eyes at me which validated my decision.

I’ve only flown first class one time in my life. There’s zero chance I would go to a lower class if I had paid for first class. Zero. I also wouldn’t move from business class to anywhere behind me. When I pay for a service, I want that service. Maybe that makes me selfish, but I work hard for my money, too.

If it were in exchange for an equivalent first class seat, I wouldn’t have any problem with it.

However, if I planned ahead and paid for first class and someone who did do either, wanted to be bumped up to first class for nothing, forget it.

I would see that as someone scamming to get a free upgrade at someone else’s expense.

Nope.

It’s unclear whether she was being asked to give up her first class seat because the other family was split between first class and coach, and she would end up in a coach seat.

If that were the case, then heck no I wouldn’t give up my seat in first class either.

But if it were just musical chairs within first class, I would probably accommodate the request. Just keep those free drinks coming...

I’ve switched seats a couple of times so that people could sit together. But I would *not* switch from a first or business class seat to a coach seat to accommodate that.

Wait was this 1st class to 1st class? Or 1st class to no class seating?

Why is this even a story? What kind of cretin would ask someone who PAID for a first class seat to sit in coach just so they could “sit together”. Its ridiculous.

The airline should refund the entire price and comp the person asked to give up their seat with the asker paying for all this.

Sounds like she was being asked to switch from full fare first class to cattle class. The gall of anyone who asked. Maybe if they offered to reimburse her the cost of the ticket she would have accepted - maybe. Would be her choice. And hope they had a lot of cash on hand.

That seems to be the $64,000 question. If I was alone in first and asked to move to a different seat in first, I would do it, as there are no bad seats there.

If however, she was being asked to move from first to coach, how would this even be a question? It would be like me buying a nosebleed seat to a football game and asking someone on the 50 yard-line if they would mind changing seats? Uh, NO.

If I paid for a first class seat, there’s practically no reason I would move to the cattle car section.

That being said, I’ve only traveled first or business class a handful of times.

I remember reading where Sheila Jackson Lee had a woman kicked out of her paid first class seat so Jackson could take it. AA said it was because she was a VIP.

Last month I was offered a aisle seat further back in exchange for my middle seat towards the front. I was happy to oblige as it was an ‘upgrade’ of sorts for me and it allowed the young lady to sit with her elderly mother and also she wasn’t acting in an entitled manner in the least bit. I told her however that I was holding on to my original boarding pass in the event of ‘complications’

Its not selfish to expect what you paid for.

Stop thinking its selfish. No one else will protect your self interests, especially if you are a guy.

This is 100% true and accurate.
