It is an extraordinary thing when a movie becomes so meaningful, timeless, and impactful, that it remains relevant and popular while its audience grows with each new generation. In the case of Cecil B. De Milleโs The Ten Commandments, there are a multitude of reasons for that. The Ten Commandments has two significant components that work in its favor. For one; consider the source. The Biblical book of Exodus explicitly chronicles the sovereignty of God, as well as His intercessory involvement in freeing His chosen people, the Hebrews. It is an integral part of Hebrew history, and plays a vital role in the development and maintenance of western civilization, as well as the concept of liberty. It also introduces the world to Godโs laws, and moral code to the world in a direct and straightforward way, which are in turn, set in stone. The second most significant component at work in this film is how the story plays out under the direction of legendary storyteller Cecil B. DeMille.

The first year I pastored in Freetown, Sierra Leone, I showed this movie after church as part of a community outreach. We had Kool Aid, fish sandwiches, and popcorn and I projected the movie on a wall in our little church. That Easter I had 250 people in that tiny little church and my next week was spent answering questions about different parts of the movie.
Eventually, two muslim families from the area converted and became staunch members of the church, and still are.
I thought it was the 15 Commandments, until Moses(Mel Brooks) dropped 5?
"Commandments" sounds awfully authoritarian.

Also have Quo Vadis, King of Kings and others.
Love this movie...
Remember as a kid in the early 1970’s, age 8 or 9, the movie making a big production in my Catholic home.
Mom made the popcorn and all of us gathered round to watch Moses become God’s deliverer.
Good times!
Joey, my ten-year-old piano student, was starting to take Bar Mitzvah lessons to prepare for The Big Day 2-3 years hence. Joey loved movies, and he asked me if I knew any movies that would help him understand more would help him understand what being Jewish was all about. I immediately suggested “The Ten Commandments”, and recommended that he take two nights to watch it because it was very long.
The following week, I asked Joey if he had seen the movie.
“Oh yes! And I watched the whole thing in one night!,” was his reply.
They he mused, “I only have ONE question though.”
Being a Christian, I wondered if maybe his rabbi would be able to answer any deep questions Joey might have about his religion, but I took the plunge and asked Joey what his question was.
Here it is:
“WHAT WAS MOSES DOING ON THE PLANET OF THE APES?”
Charlton Heston played both roles!
At the time, I had an internet friend who was working as a caregiver for Charlton Heston, who suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease. He shared Joey’s story, and Charlton got the joke right away, and laughed that wonderful hearty laugh of his. It brightened his whole day!
My family and I used to watch The 10 Commandments every Easter Season on TV.
It is fair to say it influenced my life.
To this very day... Whenever I read the words of Moses..
It still plays in my head with the voice of Charlton Heston.
Trying to convert Valerie Jarrett.
Ha Ha Ha!
Great Answer! :-)
Lol!
You owe me a Yuengling and a new keyboard, PAL!!๐๐๐๐
Watch it while you can, before it gets pulled and banished forever...
Excellent testimony. It sparks meaningful thought, and opens the door to questions. What an opportunity to witness and share God’s work, power, and intervention through that. Thank you for sharing that.
Thank you for posting that link. I did not know it was available on there.
That is such a cool story. Thank you so much for sharing that.
Thanks for posting that. I do have to wonder what the other 5 Commandments would have been.
And it’s a reminder that Hollywood can produce quality movies and TV, if they choose to do so.
