There’s no denying the South has some of the best fried chicken in the country. But the secret's out and all around the country chefs are frying up some great fried chicken. Here are our picks for the 13 best.

If you find yourself craving fried chicken in upstate New York, Portland, Oregon or California, we’ve got you covered. Some of these restaurants are serving up classic Southern fried chicken or putting their own twist on our fried favorite. Either way, all of these restaurants will satisfy your fried chicken

The Crack Shack San Diego Founders Michael Rosen and Atlanta transplant Richard Blais had a bold, but simple vision when they created The Crack Shack: Southern California fried chicken and eggs. And with their “crack spice” and locally raised free-living chickens, the menu at The Crack Shack reimagines these classic dishes. While the menu varies at each location, the delicious fried chicken stays the same.

Very best fried chicken ever and never duplicated was in the summer of 1966 at a hole in the wall diner across from the Chevrolet dealership in Forest City, Arkansas.

Second best ever is Pete’s Place in McAlester, Oklahoma.

Not great on popcorn, use bacon grease to pop it with.

Bacon grease is also a great substitute for butter, in cookie recipes. A good size batch of cookies will pretty much nuke the butter supply, I’ve been saving bacon grease forever so it’s Thrifty.

Hey, everyone! We’re all invited over to dinodino’s house for a fried chicken dinner!

Fetch me a beer, willya buddy? You’ll find it in the fridge in the kitchen.

Hey, people! Keep your feet off the furniture! You’re all guests in someone’s home! You weren’t born in a barn...

(puts feet up on coffee table)

...like I was.

Me too, and extra heavy on the pepper.

Like most things, I probably do it this way because that’s how my Mother cooked it.

Dredge in Buttermilk. Bag and shake with corn starch, S&P. GRILL it. No Flour.

Marvelous. Aunt Rose taught me that.

all dark meat original recipe is very very good but not as good as it was before they changed their frying oil...

and the sides.....awful mashed potatoes but then again, any mashed potatoes that are made from dehydrated or flaky mixes, aren't very good.....

do people even remember how to make mashed potatoes anymore?

Solid point about the oil. They all changed to some nasty oil that ruined things. Also I am convinced Tyson et al are turning out low quality chicken that just doesn’t taste the same.

“Keep your feet off the furniture! You’re all guests in someone’s home! You weren’t born in a barn...”

I was at work one day I had my feet up on one of those old slide-out typewriter boards that you put the typewriter on. Of course we no longer had typewriters, but we still had those old desks.

Bobby walks in, looks at my feet up on that little pullout typewriter thing and says, “Do you put your feet up on your furniture at home?” I looked Bobby straight in the eye and I said, “Bobby, I wouldn’t own furniture I couldn’t put my feet up on.”

Bobby looked a little ticked off at that... fuggum.

“Some of the early Kentucky Fried Chicken was really good but they seem to have forgotten how to make it.”

You have a good point there. The first KFC was finger lickin’ good, so was the gravy and coleslaw.

About 20 years or so ago they changed oils and the flavor went out the door.

Then the best frozen chicken was Banquet. Then about 3 years ago they changed their recipee.

Now the best is what we fry ourselves.

I’m sure it’s good, but BBQ chicken is not the the best fried chicken.

Pardon me for simply stating that I’ve been stationed all over the USA (less HI & AK) and have found NO good fried chicken outside of the 13 Dixie States ANY PLACE, EXCEPT when cooked by ex-patriot SOUTHERNERS.

NOR is there ANY decent Tex-Mex food nor TX BBQ, except here in Texas and/or out of the kitchens of ex-patriot Texicans.
(When I was in Ft Drum NY, I was often asked where to get decent Tex-Mex food in NY. - At my house was my TRUTHFUL answer.)

Note: When I was stationed at Ft Indiantown Gap, PA, I had a TX-style “wet smoke pit” built by a local welder, using an old 500 gallon LPG tank & a “junked boat trailer” chassis. = When it was completed, his honest comment was, “Never seen one of those contraptions. I hope that you’re pleased with this thing, whatever it is.” = I was PLEASED for sure & my place on post became Dixie’s “ex-patriot haven” for homesick Southerners/Texicans.
(One SC ex-patriot wrote home to get FIVE GALLONS of YELLOW BBQ sauce.)

Yours, TMN78247
