Which one is stockpiled by the millions in thousands of warehouses and millions of homes?
Case closed. For me.
Scavangability .308 dominates. The 6.5 Creedmor will make a nice doorstop.
I haven't put my 6.5 through the paces yet but I believe that it will remain a "speciality gun" to me.
What are the most common calibers?
.223. 308, 3006, Military surplus all and easier to find during hard times.
Not me.
One of each.
The 6.5’s are nice rigs.
But there are trillions of .308 laying around.
I like the Creedmore. However, it fills the niche that a .243 does. Not a bad cart, but not my favorite.
I have an emotional attachment to my .308. My first deer killed as an adult was with a .308 handload.
Hah!
The 5.56/.223 is a sucky round ... so we are told. But it is stockpiled everywhere by citizens and by the gummint. Have a 5.56mm rifle.
The 7.62/.308 is a sucky round ... so we are told. But it is stockpiled everywhere by citizens and by the gummint. Have a 7.62mm rifle.
If you want something else, in addition ... knock yourself out.
Same deal with the 30-30 vs .300 Savage. Ballistics are nearly identical, with the .300 Savage having a slight advantage.
But as a SHTF firearm, the 30-30 wins hands down.
30-30s are a Midwestern staple. The Savage is an also ran.
Darn...I gotta but another rifle.
Oh well, such is life.
“....Which one is stockpiled by the millions in thousands of warehouses and millions of homes? Case closed. For me....”
Yep...me too.
I love the 6.5, but in a real SHTF scenario, you’re gonna want to be able to use ammo that can be scavenged from almost anywhere....that means military calibers that can be used in civilian rifles.
good thing you didn’t misstype, I gotta but another gun.
I live in the Florida Panhandle. For the most part, the area around here is heavily wooded. You might see a long shot along a power line right of way, or a cotton field but that is not the norm.
In the unlikely event that there is a financial meltdown or any other kind, I do not intend to try and resupply my small collection of guns.
I really wish I had a Remington 700 in 30-06 but that is unlikely to happen at this stage in my life.
I can make do with a Swedish Mauser. I wish it was one of the 24 inch barrel models which I used to have but the 29 inch barrel will be OK.
I have maybe 800 rounds of Lapua Match and Norma softpoint. That is more than ample. I doubt I would survive a shooting match which required more than 20 rounds.
I do have one more interesting rifle. It is a Marlin .22 magnum bolt action. It is not beautifully finished but darn that thing will shoot. It will consistently put all shots into a single hole at 50 yards.
When Walmart was clearing out the 10 shot mags for it, I bought a dozen or so and keep them all loaded in a pouch. I would like to use something more powerful but the accuracy alone might make me choose it.
I have more .22 mag and .22Lr than I will ever use
exactly
Ballistics are nearly identical, with the .300 Savage having a slight advantage.
But, for ammo availability, I agree with you. Lots of .30-30, not much .300 Savage on the shelves.
Simpler to go with the .308.
“Which one is stockpiled by the millions in thousands of warehouses and millions of homes?
Case closed. For me.”
I’ll second that!
I wonder what gratuity the author received for this crock.
I’ve reliably hit 1000m targets with a pencil-thin 19” .308 having just a few days’ practice.
There’s no SHTF scenario in this region that would involve 1000m targets.
I’ve 4000 rounds of .308, every gun shop stocks it, and probably every 3rd house has some; dunno if I could find 40 rounds of 6.5 in the area.
Sure, 6.5 is probably a marginally superior round to choose if one were instantiating a new infrastructure for that scale of caliber. Alas, we already have a deeply entrenched infrastructure in place for a close-enough projectile. .308 wins.
I helped a man move his arsenal of ammo one time. It was a teachable moment.
A few hundred .30 Cal rounds of reload projectiles or full cartridges in an ammo box is heavy stuff. You’re not going to be able to throw it in your backpack or pockets and trot around.
If things get iffy and people have to go on long walks with a firearm, the .22 LR is going to be the default. Of course, we’re talking desperate days if people are reduced to armed foot travel.
The debate is interesting but largely irrelevant because hunting game for survival is not sustainable as game will become extinct in all but the remotest areas in short order. One would increase their chances for survival by investing in fishing equipment and acquiring an excellent knowledge of local edible wild plants and bugs. A round that is optimal for defense against humans who wish to rob your supplies or eliminate competition for resources and has a secondary role as a hunting round would be the wiser choice IMO.
