Not even close. The .300 is only slightly less powerful than a .308. In fact, the .308 is a .300 Savage case with a longer neck and different shoulder angle.

But, for ammo availability, I agree with you. Lots of .30-30, not much .300 Savage on the shelves.

Simpler to go with the .308.
