Graphic Video of Daniel Shaver begging for his life before being Shot by Police
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 12/12/2017 | J Hines

A judge on Dec. 8 released graphic video showing Daniel Shaver crawling on his hands and knees and begging for his life before he was shot and killed.

The shooting, by Philip “Mitch” Brailsford, then an officer with the Mesa Police Department, occurred after officers responded to a call about a man allegedly pointing a rifle out of a fifth-floor window at a La Quinta Inn.

The graphic video, which was released after a jury on Thursday acquitted the officer of murder and manslaughter charges, stoked outrage on social media and renewed calls for reforms in law enforcement. See the graphic video of this Shaver police shooting here.
Here's some of the reaction on Facebook:

This is the third time this has been posted here.

Somebody is flogging it to try and create animosity toward cops.

This is just a horrible example to make a pro cop stand on. Conflicting and confusing orders, keep threatening to shoot the victim despite complying as best he understood.

Like 6 cops screaming stop resisting as they’re kicking and pummeling and eventually shooting a victim.

Yep, it was the officer who made this situation tense.

If any one of you was the guy on the floor getting shouted at and threatened over every single move how would you react.
It almost seemed like, You move we shoot, you don’t move right , we shoot, and if you get scared because we are shouting, we might shoot.

You can’t get SWAT tactics all from a book or training most of it comes from common sense and this Officer didn’t have any.

The best reason for not hiring a cop is because he wants the job.

My general thoughts on this are the same as they are for Muslims. Sure, we can quibble over if the number of “good” cops or Muslims is 90% or 50% or even 99.9%. But if the “good” ones know about and protect the bad ones, then they can not really be considered “good” anymore. They are just as bad. As you say - doing nothing to weed out the psychotic.

We need to be consistent with this message. We need to treat the blue wall the same as we expect from so-call moderate Muslims. Until you stop protecting the bad, don’t expect us to respect you.

When you’re being screamed at, it’s hard to process information.

It also doesn't help to have someone threatening 'do exactly as I say or I WILL shoot you' and then shouting a bunch of confusing commands.

The “blue wall” need to show some respect for the people who pay their salaries and buy all their cool toys.

Yep. The only way the guy here could have survived would be if he was trained through multiple role play exercises before it actually happened. Maybe our public schools should require a class on how to be arrested. ;-)

Agreed. I also think that the suspect wasn’t evading and the situation was more controlled by the police than the suspect. (vs... an example, say, if an officer gets a call in an alley, low lighting, person moving side to side etc...) I truly understand that in certain cases the officer shoots because of lack of visibility, no backup present, multiple suspects etc... This case is very different IMHO.

A 10th posting would be good.

This cop behavior is outrageous.

I agree 90% is too high.

I too am sickened by this video, but I worked with the police just about every day that I went to work for 25 years. Your original 90% estimate of police being good people trying to do their jobs to the best of their ability was probably about right or maybe even a little low. The problem is that the small minority that are idiots can create a huge amount of problems.

I actually responded with my crew to a screwed up mess where the police were doing CPR on a guy still in handcuffs. My immediate first thought was that they must have done something really bad... because the police basically never do CPR on anyone. And I was right.

Sure enough they had handcuffed this huge, fat drunk guy that they had been trying to get under control and left him face down. By the time they realized that he had stopped making noise and fighting because he had lost consciousness from suffocation... he was dead.

Their pathetic efforts at CPR were completely useless. None of them realized that they needed to get the cuffs off the guy before they could do effective compressions.

I respect cops. I do not respect this EX-cop tho. This guy had no business making people crawl. Under these circumstances, small errors can be made, which as they were warned ‘a mistake would be dealth with and they may not survive’. Why not just walk over to them and handcuff them while they were on the ground?

This guy was on some sort of power trip and felt he had justification to take a persons life. If the Police Officer had done the right thing, he would not have made them crawl.

I have animosity towards this cop! I have a feeling his whole (ex) squad feels the same way. I’m sure they are glad he’s gone.

I would take your suggestion one step further and require all LEO to take an oath similar to the Honor Code in place at our Nation's military academies: "A cadet [police officer] will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do." (Empasisi added.) Violations of the honor code should result in expulsion from the force.

This is a true story: I will not use any names here, but I was in charge of a security detail at a private firm in San Diego. There was one young man there we jokingly called Tackleberry after the character in the Police Academy movies, because he was so Gung Ho. He was going through the process of being hired by the San Diego PD. He told me he couldn’t wait to be a cop so he could “legally bust some heads.” And he wasn’t kidding either. I told my supervisor about it, who was a former Detroit cop. He told me not to worry about, that they would screen him out. A few years later I was back in San Diego and saw him get out of a patrol car in uniform to go hassle some homeless guys. Disturbing.

They are only as good as the worst cop they tolerate on the force. One rotten apple spoils anyone who doesn’t condemn it.

You can’t tell me there weren’t numerous officers on this force who knew this yahoo shouldn’t have a gun, and all of them are just as guilty of murder, cold blooded murder.

When did cops change from being peace officers to law enforcement officers. To “serve and protect” seems a foreign concept to some.
