WELCOME TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD O' DIABEETUS (blood glucose monitor recommendations plz)
12/5/17 | marty_f

Posted on 12/05/2017 7:54:53 AM PST by martin_fierro

Well, your ollll' marty was recently diagnosed with early stage Type II Diabeetus.

Doc prescribed pills that sound like some Yankee RINO's name: "Metformin."

I'm doing all the Intarweb research that I can on the topic but I'd like to hear FReepers' personal takes on what to look for in a blood glucose monitor.

I figure if I'm going to be using this monitor for awhile it should be a good one. The one the Doc suggested -- that my insurance would most readily pay for -- doesn't get good reviews at all ("wildly inaccurate readings").

Your input please!

Do you have any feeling of anxiety? I ask as anxiety can cause them and there are meds to control it. I don’t recommend as the medicine is very addictive.

But there is very benign medicine to control shaking body and hands. I have used it and it is very effective.

Thanks Terry!

I’m already cutting down on meal sizes/frequency and started taking a small (500 mg) daily dose of Metformin, possibly to be increased later.

I’ll look at the glucose monitory you recommended. The ability to track/offload to computer blood sugar data would be a plus.

2 measurements taken after my fasting for 12 hours my numbers were: 200+ and 188. NO ES BUENO.

Well, better to have discovered it now than later.

Thanks again,
marty

Dear Martin,

180 and 200, oh my. Not as bad as my darling beloved, who started at +400!!

Meal frequencies must be 3 meals, or 5 mini-meals, because you don’t want to bottom out, either.

The meter keeps a record, and has an infrared sensor in it.

I was on metformin for a while, and then a couple of years ago, with all the blood results on record, my V.A. primary guy took me off. I measure in the morning, while staring at my coffee and breakfast.

Remember, ‘inner strength’ is having a dark hershey chocolate bar, breaking it into smaller pieces, and eating only ONE small piece.

It should be thought of as a war. Having several random timed blood glucose checks a day helps you establish what works for you, and if something doesn’t.

Definitely start off with Gymnema. That should get and keep your blood sugar in the non-diabetic range. Then you add the ginger, to get your A1C down as well. The clove and turmeric/black pepper helps to stabilize it at the lower level.

Some people add cinnamon at that point, as for some people it reduces the blood sugar fluctuations during the day.

From that point, experiment. Try eliminating one of the lesser ones, and see what happens to your blood sugar.

I have no more anxiety than the average person, I believe. And the shaking is all internal. I don’t think it’s caused by stress because it’s just as bad on the weekends as it is on the workdays.

There’s a self-reinforcing positive feedback loop between the pharmasurance syndicate and what the cattle (both bipedal quadrapeds varieties) are fed.

Not following the path of least means folks taking personal responsibility for all aspects of their health - and acting accordingly... which, requires a certain amount of motivation.

I went with the ReliOn "Confirm" monitor due to your recommendations + those I found on the Intartubes.

The relatively inexpensive strips were a major factor, plus the unit's ability to track measurements over a long period of time.

I wish it were easier to offload the data to a MAC, but you can't have everything. < |:(~

Peace to you, and thanks for the update.

I do a great deal of computer consulting and I use a Mac...running Windows 7 Professional.

I install Parallels (it’s a software that allows virtual machines - i.e. another operating system -OS) and a W7 or W8.1 OS.

It’s easier than it sounds...

It can be done for less than $100.00 and you would have a full fledged Windows computer - inside of your Mac, then you can use the RelyOn software.

PM me if you are interested, I can send you links to the correct software (100% legal). Clearly I want NOTHING to help you, just to help you set up your computer to help you with your diabetes.

Best wishes to you this Christmas season.

***** I was diagnosed as “pre-diabetic” for the umpteenth time. *****

Same here. That means no matter what your number are, if you don’t have Diabetes, you’re pre-diabetic.

I have a pre-amputated leg & arm too.

Everyone who is diabetic has their own personal favorite site and set of beliefs on how to beat or at least live with this disease. I too, have my favorite. I was diagnosed as being pre-diabetic. Pre means earlier than: prior to: and before. Which by definition means, I don’t have it. YET!! Still, I wanted to learn about Diabetes causes and cures as I learned how to live with high blood pressure.

I love chocolate so I started using the below link. Mix in some Silk Almond or Silk Coconut milk. I blend with some chia, flax and hemp seeds. Sometimes I add unsweetened coconut, or black grapes or Walnuts, or Pecans in for a change of taste. I have to add some sweetener like Stevia and sometimes coconut sugar as raw cacao is bitter as heck.

Talk about good. Once you get the right amount to blend you have a great dessert.

South Beach Diet has been great for me. I was actually taken off one of my diabetes meds (glimeperide?) because my A1C got too low.

“if someone sets a piece of homemade apple pie in front of you, then I eat it with relish.”

If you eat pie that was set in front of me, I’m going to be pissed. ESPECIALLY if you put relish on it.
