WELCOME TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD O' DIABEETUS (blood glucose monitor recommendations plz)
12/5/17 | marty_f

Well, your ollll' marty was recently diagnosed with early stage Type II Diabeetus.

Doc prescribed pills that sound like some Yankee RINO's name: "Metformin."

I'm doing all the Intarweb research that I can on the topic but I'd like to hear FReepers' personal takes on what to look for in a blood glucose monitor.

I figure if I'm going to be using this monitor for awhile it should be a good one. The one the Doc suggested -- that my insurance would most readily pay for -- doesn't get good reviews at all ("wildly inaccurate readings").

Your input please!

Martin,

Diabetes can be controlled via diet. For lots of good information about food and health, check out this site and its related sites:

Thats for the uber hard core. I have a bottle. Strong stuff !

Get your ass healthy!

Ya just gotta find those little things you can take back from the food/Phama industry what they done took from you.

I still use brown Raw sugar and am convinced it helps compared to equal amounts of processed white sugar.

Eat Pecans, cashews , ALL nuts. They are all good for you. All fresh fruit is good for you. Have a steak and fried jumbo shrimp, its good for you.

Stay out of the canned section and the frozen section of the supermarket.

Aha! So cornbread was invented not by blacks but by Indians so that STILL makes it cultural appropriation for whites to partake of it.

I rest my case.

Yes. Omnipod. Cost is $10 every 3 days, but really helps me as I’ve horribly brittle.

I was diagnosed with Type II last may. I got scared and did a lot of research on it. And started taking a lot of vitamin supplements that their proponents said would cure it.

I went on a diet that curbed my sweets and carbs. Started watching the labels to cut down on processed food with high fructose to make it taste good.

And my blood readings came down according to the Dr. without using the blood testing regime at all. Lose at least 15-20 pounds and see what happens.

My cholesterol dropped a lot when I started avoiding high fructose corn syrup.

Not experienced with diabetes, but lots of medical experience in other areas, so I recommend finding medical fora to discuss with real patients:

https://www.healthboards.com/boards/index.php

Also this is handy when looking for meds:

I used to love wrongdiagnosis.com and even WebMD.com, but they’ve changed enough to be not so useful. I still use WebMD to narrow down aches & pains somewhat, usually in desperation.

Last year my doctor told me my numbers were “pre-diabetic.” So I started reading up on how to reduce my blood sugar. I read books by these doctors: William Davis, Mark Hyman, and Joel Fuhrman. There are some differences among them, but what they all agree on is this: Cut the processed foods, bad carbs, and sugars. No soda pop. Eat real, whole, fresh foods. More vegetables and fruits. More water. That sort of thing. Your blood sugar numbers should come down.

I second your suggestion for a diabetes thread.

I was diagnosed as “pre-diabetic” for the umpteenth time. But I have a big time full blown diabetic symptom of “diabetic neuropathy” which is non-reversible.

Don’t get it!

A person can be pre-diabetic but have all the downsides of diabetes. Like me!

if someone sets a piece of homemade apple pie in front of you, then I eat it with relish.

Eww! That doesn't sound good!

I am having constant internal...I guess you'd call them tremors. It's not exactly tingling. It's almost like electric shocks going through my body. The neurologist said high blood sugar could cause it. I've changed my diet, lost nine pounds, and got my waist down to half my height in inches, but it has not affected the tremors one bit. And I'm only prediabetic. I hope I'm not going to feel this way the rest of my life, but I'm beginning to fear that I will.
