As North Korea Backs Down at Guam – Is This Our Generation’s Cuban Missile Crisis?
IWB ^ | Mark Angelides

North Korea has backed off Guam and said that after reviewing plans with top Generals that it will not be going though with its “escalation.” It seems that for now, a combination of US Diplomacy and Chinese Sanctions has won through. But how close were we to actual war, and is this more evidence that President Trump is actually a canny international operator?

The similarities between the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Guam situation are many (although clearly not exact parallels). An isolated country (perhaps with backing from a larger, more powerful nation) threatened the territories of the US and ended up in a face-off over who will blink first. This was not only an opportunity to humiliate America, but one which could have changed the political landscape forever. If NK had actually launched missiles (not at Guam, but within Guam’s waters), the US would have had to react. A reaction would have escalated the situation and lives would have been lost. If however, the US had not reacted, every nation with a beef against the US would be pushing the boundaries.

No, not really. Kim and North Korea are nothing compared to the Soviet Union. Besides, this is still not over.

Trump will not be given credit for this.

The parallels to the Cuban Crisis, while inexact, will not be lost on the Norks either. After all, the resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis resulted in pledges by the US never to seek regime change in Cuba. Kim would be happy to arrange to get such a pledge from US.

President Trump is a great deal maker. Perhaps he can make a mega-deal with China, offering China enough to abandon North Korea.

The Russians could hurt us. The North Koreans could not.

The Cuban missile crisis was real, my Brother-in-Law was flying P2Vs right off the coast of Cuba.

What the press got intentionally wrong was it was Khrushchev who came out ahead.

It was one of the main reasons Khrushchev was removed two years later.

No. JFK only got the Commies to back down by giving up territory of vital strategic importance to this nation in Turkey.

Trump stared down Red China and Fat Man Kim and got them both to blink without losing a single American life, dollar or any strategic interest.

It was an incredible victory.

No comparison whatsoever. America both military & civilian was scared and on a war footing in October 1962.

Kim Dong Fatso gets mostly a ho-hum from America now. Not even a hiccup in the stock market or the price of gas.

We already gave him that. On comparison, he should realize that his country is nothing compared to the old Soviet Union.

A mega deal with China? How about one with the Norks? We can ALWAYS offer a better deal than anyone.

I was on voice recog, there, with my phone and sorta botched it:

I was idly speculating, but I noticed that China suddenly bought into the anti-Nork sanctions and my guess is that that Chinese cooperation wasn’t free.

But you have a good point, there might have been some horse-trading done directly with the Norks, too.

I hate to tell you, but in the big picture we only broke even in what’s known as the Cuban Missile Crises. A lot of the “history” is designed to make Democrat JFK look good and tough in the face of Soviet “aggression”.

Here’s the sequence of events that make up the bigger picture starting before the October events known as the “Cuban Missile Crisis”:

1. U.S. missiles to Turkey
2. Soviet missiles to Cuba
3. Soviet missiles withdrawn from Cuba
4. 6 month delay
5. U.S. missiles withdrawn from Turkey.

Our missiles were withdrawn quietly with no U.S. press and 6 months after the Soviets withdrew their missiles from Cuba per the agreement between Kennedy and Khrushcev. But don’t kid yourself, Khrushchev got what he wanted, which to was to get those missiles out of Turkey.

Not by a long shot. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the U.S. Navy confronted Soviet missile-toting war ships on their way to Cuba. There was actually a stand off. What we have here in blabber and no ships. North Korea's Navy is a brown water navy with east and west coast fleets. In the event of war or confrontation, the two navies could not even join forces.

Besides, I'm thinking that the un-jong understands that American intelligence knows exactly where he is at all times--by stench if not actually by military detection equipment.
