Today in U.S. military history: Rough Riders land in Cuba and the last shot of the Civil War

1807: Off the coast of Norfolk, Va., the British frigate HMS Leopold attacks the American vessel USS Chesapeake, forcing Commodore James Barron to surrender the ship after only managing to fire one shot. Four Americans are dead and 17 wounded in the attack, and the British board Chesapeake, taking four British deserters. The British impress thousands of American sailors into their service during the Napoleonic War, but "Chesapeake-Leopold Affair" outrages the Americans and will lead to the War of 1812.

1813: Some 2,000 Royal Marines and British soldiers attempt to attack the American fortifications at Craney Island, guarding Hapton Roads, Va. But unlike the crew of the Chesapeake six years ago (which in fact, took place near the site of Craney Island), the defenders are prepared - and repel the invasion. The American guns inflict 200 casualties in one of the first engagements of the War of 1812.

1865: The Confederate commerce raider CSS Shenandoah fires the last shot of the Civil War - a warning shot at a U.S. whaling vessel in the Bering Straight. Shenandoah captured 38 ships and some 1,000 sailors during the Civil War, and becomes the only Confederate ship to circumnavigate the globe when it sails to England to surrender - marking the last time the Confederate colors are struck.

1884: After three years of being stranded by ice in the Canadian Arctic, a rescue expedition led by Cmdr. Winfield S. Schley finds Lt. Adolphus W. Greely and six of his men from the ill-fated Lady Franklin Bay Expedition. 16 of Greely's men had perished from hypothermia, starvation, drowning, and one man was ordered shot for repeatedly stealing food rations.

1898: The "Rough Riders" of the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, led by Col. Leonard Wood and Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt, begin landing at Daiquiri

Prior to the war, Roosevelt served as an officer with the New York National Guard before becoming Secretary of the Navy. His son Theodore Jr. was among the first troops ashore at Utah Beach during the Normandy Invasion. Theodore was awarded the Medal of Honor and his father was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2001, having been nominated for his actions at San Juan Hill during the war.

landing at Daiquiri

Sounds like thirsty work.

That was the HMS Leopard, not Leopold.

My grandfather was in Cuba with Teddy Roosevelt.
My grandfather was in the band that played when they stormed San Juan Hill.
That was probably the last time our forces went into battle to the accompaniment of music from a band.

landing at Daiquiri... Sounds like thirsty work. My thoughts exactly. I would prefer to have landed at Budweiser Beach and assault Bratwurst Hill, followed by a long and drawn out campaign to take Nap using the Hammock maneuver.

What makes the writer think the civil war is over?

It was the last old fashioned war. The modern technology that put an end to that kind of fighting had already been invented, but was not used by either side.

In WWI, only sixteen years later, they used powerful machine guns that fired hundreds of rounds a minute. Say goodbye to cavalry charges!

You mean the Cold Civil War being waged against the constitutional republic? I don’t know whether there will be open warfare (who on the Left would actually be willing to take up arms), but it is definitely a war from within against the United States as we know it. These people are doing far more damage to our country than any enemy could ever have hoped to.

"...take Nap using the Hammock maneuver..."

I was at the beach recently and could tell which folks were the Euros, because they were they only ones using the Banana Hammock Maneuver.

It was a mix, with us being on the short end. Spanish troops has 5-shot magazine-fed 7MM Mauser rifles, we had single shot 45-70 black powder rifles or 30-40 loose ammo Krag rifles; they had Maxim machine guns, we had Gatling guns; they had lousy leadership, we had somewhat better.

“You mean the Cold Civil War being waged against the constitutional republic?”

Partly. But what really sticks out is the systematic removal of civil war statues, pictures, displays, and verbiage that is being used as a tool to demonize history. Over the years, it was better understood that the civil war was more than a war concerning the freeing of the slaves. It also was financial and posturing for governmental control. But the slave issue was used as the focal point to start and continue the carnage until one side got beat to their knees, in this case the south.

This concept is still being used today. The mistreatment of black Americans is being generated by the same people that did the actual mistreatment years ago, i.e., southern democrats.

The south didn’t want to free the slaves, they needed them. But on the same pretense, the north didn’t need to anyway except to protect the government voting in congress by the rules of the time. So, freeing was a mute point. Getting the south under control was the issue.

But the northern conservatives made it look like they came in on their white horse to free the slaves. And the liberal southern democrats dug in their heals. We don’t see many, hopefully no, Jim Crow Laws, or marked drinking fountains, or seating locations, or non-service signs as most of that has been stopped. And that went both ways believe it or not as I saw signs in predominately black areas like Compton, California that had no white signs posted as late as the 90’s.

Have we stopped making war with each other? Ask the cops that were picked off in Texas. Ask the high school football teams that took knees during the national anthem when they are just barely worldly enough to wipe their nose.

It’s still out there, unfortunately. And again being used for the wrong reasons. And all the time the people that are out there killing or being killed are nothing more than pawns. A tool to an end that will never happen.

Yes, while ISIS is destroying historical monuments overseas, the Left is doing the same over here. St. Louis is in the process of removing a Confederate monument. It’s a shame, and I don’t see anyone in a leadership position fighting back in the war of ideas.

Isn’t it sad, besides stupid?

Here this country has reached major proportions on the economy, unemployment, illegal immigration that ads to both the previous, overseas erosion of our natural resources costing us trillions in product and funds, (not to mention military lives), the lack of space exploration for our future, bridges falling apart all over the US, criminal killings now taking out more people than the public roadways........I’m not even really part way done.

And all these people can think of to concentrate on is the removal of one hundred fifty year old pieces of art that should have almost no meaning to today’s society except that that the left can throw in somebody’s face to cause unrest. It’s almost embarrassing to think these people who do this can breed and call themselves red blooded Americans.
