The Trump administration wants to impose a work requirement on able-bodied adults who receive food stamps and force states to pick up some of the costs as part of a wider plan to slash spending by $3.6 trillion over the next decade.
Budget director Mick Mulvaney said that once states have a little skin in the game, they will be more inclined to root out abuses and waste in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Enrollments havent decreased much since the recession despite a low 4.5 percent unemployment rate.
The program cost about $33 billion in 2007 with 26 million enrollees. By 2013, costs peaked at nearly $80 billion with 47.6 million participants.
But despite the economic recovery, there were still about 44 million people getting benefits in 2016 at a cost of $71 billion.....

Oh, the Inhumanity of this man.
Do any good?
Liberal heads exploding like a 4th or July finale.
The horror.
About time! And drug testing! And Tubal ligation!!
There are TV ads on here (MN) showing “immigrants” praising all of the free chit they get when they are here....WIC if they have kids, free meals for school age kids, Welfare, you name it.........Im surprised at the end of the ad, the wench doesnt add “Y’all come!!”
Makes me sick to my stomach
And the problem is????
Didn’t go very well did it?
FINALLY!!! It is NOT GOOD for people to TAKE and TAKE and TAKE and NEVER give anything back.
yes! for those that are physically and mentally capable of doing something productive, yes it will help their self-respect and might maybe help the taxpayers and economy a bit too
I believe for those who are physically and mentally able, before receiving state welfare, should meet a state truck evry morning and clean the roads to get their check...
Some. Had better luck helping veterans, which was my other role. The welfare moms brought in potluck on Fridays (the last day of class) and some of those girls could cook.
Just turn it over to the states and let them deal with it. That and housing, WIC, etc. Completely.
They started requiring recipients of general assistance to work a certain number of volunteer hours in a township where I live 4 years ago. Between that and the kind of training you describe, the number of people receiving assistance is now less than one-third what it was. I’ve used some of those who were willing to work on volunteer projects and most of them were fine.
“The horror.”
Damn, you beat me to it!
How about turning Food Stamps over to the states and getting the federal government out of the business entirely. Then each state can do what it wants. Most are Republican states and will impose work requirements. The federal government should not be in the Welfare and Food Stamp business at all.
Minnesota used to be progressive but with common sense.
Oh the humanity.
Of course than this becomes “what is the definition of able bodied?” I like the idea of pushing off some of the costs to the states too. Like any welfare, that is a state and local issue, not anything the feds should be involved in.
