I used to teach job seeking skills classes to TANF and SNAP recipients at the unemployment office during the Bush 41 and Clinton administrations.

I believe for those who are physically and mentally able, before receiving state welfare, should meet a state truck evry morning and clean the roads to get their check...

Some. Had better luck helping veterans, which was my other role. The welfare moms brought in potluck on Fridays (the last day of class) and some of those girls could cook.

Just turn it over to the states and let them deal with it. That and housing, WIC, etc. Completely.

They started requiring recipients of general assistance to work a certain number of volunteer hours in a township where I live 4 years ago. Between that and the kind of training you describe, the number of people receiving assistance is now less than one-third what it was. I’ve used some of those who were willing to work on volunteer projects and most of them were fine.

How about turning Food Stamps over to the states and getting the federal government out of the business entirely. Then each state can do what it wants. Most are Republican states and will impose work requirements. The federal government should not be in the Welfare and Food Stamp business at all.

Oh the humanity.
Of course than this becomes “what is the definition of able bodied?” I like the idea of pushing off some of the costs to the states too. Like any welfare, that is a state and local issue, not anything the feds should be involved in.
