Next Year we'll both cross 70&1/2 and I'll fully retire Too. We intend to trade-in or sell both our cars and become a 1 car couple. Brands that we'd consider [again] are Kia, Subaru,& Volvo. We aren't fans of what Detroit builds. There are brands we haven't owned; which should consider?
We intend to stay in eastern Nebraska with it's hills and 4 Seasons; ergo an all wheel drive car.
I, make that We, hate cars with "spare tire spaces" that only accept the tiny Toy Tire spares. Why own an SUV whose "spare" is "pavement ONLY"? Why must my "FLAT" ride in the back Seat? I don't want to come to hate our next car. Hints PLEASE!

Redneck it up. Get a full size spare tire holder that goes on the back or the roof.

You have lived long enough to have your own wisdom. You really are asking this from others? Hard to believe. :)

Buy the 2017 Volvo wagon, pick up a full size spare at the junk yard, and a big roll of duct tape from Lowe’s and tape the spare tire to the roof.

C’mon it’s never too late to learn how to be a redneck.

I have a Mazda CX-5 It’s a great vehicle. Fun to drive, roomy, lots of storage, great fuel mileage and it sits up high like a small pickup so you see the road well. They also have a bit more ground clearance than a car with bigger tires so they take rough roads well.
The new one get nearly 40 mpg
They are built in Japan - or mine was
They are also, by todays standards very affordable.

Why get a spare tire when you already have rims?

May I suggest a 1976 Pinto. Make sure you get roof racks for that tire,
and a chain and lock in case someone wants to steal it. Then go to Costco
and get a case of Bondo for the rusted-out door panels. And definitely,
most defintely, get a tire jack at JC Whitney for when you need to put on
that spare tire on the roof. And make sure you have extra keys for the lock,
in case you lose one and then how are you going to change that tire?

We run an 01 Toyota Rav 4, 06 Highlander, and 10 Rav 4. One serpentine belt, but other than that, no problems in years. We’re a Toyota family.

My Jeep Wrangler came with a full size spare tire mounted on the same type rim as the other four tires. You’ll be hard pressed to find that. Most cars, if they have a spare at all, will have the donut. Otherwise, you’ll get a can of slime and an air compressor. Trucks and body-on-frame SUVs will have a full size spare if they have part time 4WD or a locking differential.

I would say no to a Volvo. They are finicky and costly to repair.

I suggest "NO COMPUTER VEHICLE !"
Something with points, plugs, and condenser, and something that's easy to maintain, and very popular.
Maybe a
Willys Wagon in rebuilt shape and not a rock crawler.
Or maybe a
1966 Ford Bronco that someone has already rebuilt.
Or if you need a full sized vehicle, a
1978 FORD F-250 CUSTOM CAMPER SPECIAL 400ci. 2WD might suit your needs better.
All of these vehicles are easy to maintain, and you can still get plenty of parts for them.
They won't cost you a small fortune to maintain either.
Most of them can be found on E-Bay over a small period of time, if you'll set up a search reminder for what you're looking for.
You just have to be prepared to buy it with cash up front, and you need to be prepared to go get it.
