To distract from the Trump/Russia election hack.
To save the lives of U.S. military personnel.
Ans.: To put a logjam in the tunnel system that goes from Afghanistan to Pakistan.
Recommendation: Put a jogjam in the other end, Pakistan.

Actually I think it was to destroy the complex as the MOAB is know for being a bunker buster.
But it is no longer even The Mother of All Bombs anymore
It was coming up on its “use by” date.
“Close” only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, and MOAB’s.

For the same reason the missiles were launched at the Syrians. To lay down a marker - Don’t mess with us. There’s a new sheriff in town.
And incidentally to kill some terrorists and to fulfill his campaign promise to bomb the sh@@ out of ISIS. I’d say the bomb did that.

They dropped a GBU-43/B which is a concussive bomb. Not to be confused with the GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP).
Another reason to drop the GBU-43/B is a pissing contest to see if the Russians will drop their Father of All Bombs or FOAB - Aviation Thermobaric Bomb of Increased Power (ATBIP) - (a thermobaric bomb) weighing in at 44 tons of TNT.

I’m in for All of the Above, plus sending a message. In one stroke Trump demonstrated:
1) Kim Jong-in, the Iranians, and ISIS can hide themselves and their WMD programs in caves and bunkers.
2) Stuff in caves and bunkers (or conventional forces massed to attack Seoul) go boom.
3) Trump is not afraid to let our military act.
4) Hardly anyone actually opposes acting. The Democrats, the media, and RINO anti-Trumpers have basically shut up and saluted.

The penetrator bomb would be less effective for random shallow tunnels and caves than against a known location, deeply sheltered single critical military (political) bomb shelter or weapons facility.
Thus the Iranian a-bomb facilities are a penetrator target, as are the NORK bomb shelters and weapons test tunnels. The Muslim targets in the hills are the better air-aerosol explosive that kills over a larger area.
The commander on the ground needed a bunker busted, and used a bunker buster to bust it.
Nothing political here whatsoever. The military is finally being unleashed to win their wars, and they are having a field day with not having their hands tied behind their backs by Obama anymore.
To impress China, North Korea, and Russia as well as ISIS.
