Like farmers eyeing the sky for a welcome rain cloud, people have been peering through the White House fence at the organic kitchen garden, searching for signs of activity.
To the great relief of chefs and other supporters of the garden, Melania Trump has announced that she will keep it going. But they are still waiting for more definitive signs of how the Trumps will feed themselves and their guests, and whether they will set — as previous administrations have — a culinary example for the nation. We know there will be plenty of salads, all to be topped with Russian dressing, of course.
Further, Trump's gardener has confirmed the planting of celery, parsnips, carrots, leeks, and cabbages for garden-fresh Borscht. There are several new rows of cabbage for Sweet-and-Sour Cabbage, for Cabbage Soup, and for Golubtsy. The President's Garden also has extra onions for Solyanka Soup, and potatoes for Potato Okroshka and for the President's favorite potato salad - Olivie. While the New York Times is officially neutral on the "Russia" questions, the Editorial Board did observe that all recipes mentioned are popular among Russians. Whether that can be taken as evidence of an expanding Russian influence remains to be seen.
The White House gardener denied any intention of distilling the large crop of potatoes for vodka, but he stumbled over an explanation of the apparatus with copper tubing recently installed in his shed. Will our Russian-supported President now take up drinking to blend in with his many Russian hackers and backers?
