A senior employee at computer giant IBM has quit her job and publicly condemned her former boss, in one example of what can happen when the leaders of a business choose to get involved in politics.
The employee decided to resign from her position at IBM after the companys chief executive Ginni Rometty published an open letter to US President-elect Donald Trump following his election win.
In her own open letter published on NewCo, senior content strategist in IBMs corporate marketing department Elizabeth Wood said she could no longer work for a company that would ignore the real needs of its workforce.
Romettys letter congratulated Trump and outlined ideas that I believe will help achieve the aspiration you articulated and that can advance a national agenda in a time of profound change.
I know that you are committed to help Americas economy grow in ways that are good for all its people, Rometty said in her letter.
In her response, Wood slammed Romettys letter, claiming it showed a willingness to legitimise threats to our country for financial gain.
Your letter offered the backing of IBMs global workforce in support of his agenda that preys on marginalised people and threatens my wellbeing as a woman, a Latina and a concerned citizen, Wood said.
The President-elect has demonstrated contempt for immigrants, veterans, people with disabilities, Black, Latinx, Jewish, Muslim and LGBTQ communities. These groups comprise a growing portion of the company you lead, Ms. Rometty. They work every day for IBMs success and have been silenced by your words.
Romettys letter offered a number of suggestions to President-elect Trump, including a focus on vocational education and new collar jobs, taking care of veterans, and building better infrastructure to support Internet of Things integration.
Rometty signs off by saying she hopes the ideas offered represent ways that we can work together to achieve prosperity that is broadly shared in our society.
Wood argued the future of IBM hinges on an inclusive and welcoming culture, and criticised Rometty after she did not mention the companys diverse culture in the open letter to Trump. Wood said her decision to leave IBM did not come lightly and that she is leaving without a backup offer or safety net.
What I do have is the knowledge that my own lifeand those of the several hundred thousand who serve your company worldwideare too valuable to waste at an organisation where we are not respected, she says.
It is my belief that you owe your staff and the President-elect a public clarification on IBMs commitment to the protection and representation of all of its employees.
Well the word “dumped” should be followed by the word “company.” But some editor reading a couple of lines and guessing where it is going to go (the company will stand up for the lefty) could be excused, kind of, for doing this.
She’s a hysterical women ..I mean hispanic women.
She must have voted for Hillary.
Companies are starting to feel freedom again. And when they do... they will stop standing up for the lefties.
I expect to see that fewer and fewer people actually are hard right. They find themselves forced into such a position for defensive reasons. There’s little else to recommend it if the need to be defensive goes away.
Yep. And this Wood character must be a real piece of work. Go ahead, sweetie, lay down your career on the altar of your misguided “beliefs.”
It sounds like Wood is quite unhinged. It’s probably good for IBM that she is leaving. Unfortunately for her, she might find it hard for others to hire her knowing how hysterical she is.
Ya know, I’m the kind of guy who would write her a letter of consolation. You just exalted the wrong thing, that’s all. All of these folks that you so worry about will gain in a rising tide, and when lefties aren’t constantly lecturing them about how downtrodden they are. God will see to it. Just rest.
Yeah what would she like the company to do? Send a nasty letter to the future President of the United States?
That’s good for a business :)
I thought Elizabeth Wood was a 2 year hire- hardly what ne calls a “senior executive”
More like an entitled SJW who has a bright career ahead of her writing snarky letters for a faux nonprofit run by one of her progressive inclusive heroines
BTW, the article was originally published in "Smart Company" (http://www.smartcompany.com.au/) with the title "How Donald Trumps election led to this senior employee quitting her job with a tech giant".
I'm glad Ms Wood lost her job. I'm sure IBM is a better company now.
Man, these lefties are such a silly burden sometimes. What we do not need is a lefty screech, but rather a God reach.
“Senior content strategist” = website article writer with one intern
yep.
They’ve already decided Trump HATES women, gays, blacks, mexicans, those on the fringe (Whatever the #### that means)...she’s an idiot and if I was her husband I’d pray for the end days.
veterans,....WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN?
Also it's a low level snowflake that's gone, not the CEO as the term "Chief Executive" implies.
Self-Deportation. Sweet.
Corporate Darwin Award for Snowflake.
“Wood argued the future of IBM hinges on an inclusive and welcoming culture” - but she can allow inclusion of the views of the majority of America.
Wood's logic is warped. She is reading things that do not exist into Rometty's letter.
How did she ever get a job that involves responsible, non-clerical work?
As a “whatever” - usually a good indicator of a liberal without tangible arguments and facts.
Ginni Rometty is probably planning on joining Jill Stein’s staff, as an accomplished Alt-Left editorial writer. /sarc
