My senior parents asked me about guns. They were always afraid of them. So my Dad got a handgun, a sig. And I took Mom and Dad to the range for the first time.

My Mom was sitting waiting scared while we signed waivers. She was scared of shooting.

So we went in, Mom shot the Sig.

Out in the parking lot I asked her, so Mom how did you like it. She said boy that was fun.

And she was the best shot of all of us.

I think women are better shooters.

Because I’m such a lousy shot, I buy the best equipment available to help. Another trick is that on the day of shooting, I have no more than a 1/2 cup of coffee, don’t hype up on sugars and usually take a few Kava Kava pills, herbs that have a great calming effect.

For me the above seems to help.

Mrs. Submareener and I just invested in a Laser Ammo SureStrike system for more frequent training. If you have a revolver, get one for each chamber. It really makes a difference not to have to reposition the cylinder between shots.

Get the Laser Ammo LeserPET Electronic Target as well. It is very small, but it is amazing what kind of gun hand sense you develop using it. We got the adapter for our 12-gauge, but I haven’t tried it yer.

My mom can outshoot all of us, Dad got her a 45 but I thought it was too big. The guy at the range said “I wouldn’t want to be in front of her.”

The willingness to actually shoot someone/something. This requires considerable thought before actually being confronted/threatened.

I’m not very good at identifying firearms, but this photo confused me a bit.

Once I noticed that there was a caption “girl_shooting_pistol” and then noticed there was a firearm in the photo, both of which took quite a while, I thought I’d ask the experts. What kind of pistol is that? If I didn’t trust American Shooting Journal, I would have guessed it wasn’t a pistol at all

[Look just to the left of the cute girl if you don’t see the firearm in question initially.]

How long does it take for you to shoot accurately?

Uh, basically never.

Define accurate, hitting a can or dotting the i on a Pepsi can?

Practice helps, hours and hours. Back in my day we would spend every afternoon in the woods with BB guns (22’s when appropriate) plinking anything that moved. Canopy shots were tricky, with BB’s you had to play the curve, pellets not so much.

In high school I was on the riflery team. At the try outs I was told I should shoot on the “club” team, but he let me try out and after 4 shots he said I could be on the team. I was the hick, broke school records and became captain.....

You can improve by practicing but, as with anything some people will always be better due to abilities and not just hard work.

Being proficient with a firearm, just like any other motor skill, requires practice, and feedback. Identifying and correcting negative habits and reinforcing positive ones leads to a better all-around shooter.

As soon as you get over flinching and jerking the trigger it’s pretty much accurate from there.

Poor practice yields poor performance. Getting good help is essential. I owned firearms for decades before I began shooting in competition. It is like sailing. You might think you know how but until you compete you have no idea.

For accuracy without pressure, I can teach a typical handgun shooter to make a very tight (close to a ragged hole) group at 5 yards in about 15 minutes - and that’s standing up and holding the gun, not a bench rest. At that point it’s primarily about trigger control. Once you start adding time pressure for multiple hits many other ergonomic and stress factors come into play and we’re talking about lots of consistent training and practice.

Dry firing the pistol with snap caps is the key.

I have 10,500 dry fires on one of my pistols. Rock steady aim and accurate at 15 and 25 yards.

And at some point the cycling smoothed out the action. Maybe 600 cycles. Your basic trigger job done for free.
