This is one of the big questions among new shooters and veterans of gun enthusiasts. Besides from just shooting your gun more to get better, there are many school of thoughts on the subject. Here are some conversations that have a myriad of advices from poor to sound constructive approaches. Just a note, though the question is at the best very general, the answers will differ on the type of person that shoots guns. Some are competitive shooters, some plinkers and some are into close quarter shooting.
Here are some of those advices on 1911 Forum and Reddit:
Sock: I took a year and shot a handgun every day (even if it was only ten rounds of .22). Unbelievable how much you can improve with that little effort. 686, xd9, ruger mk ii. Whatever I felt like that day.
Sgt.Y: My best suggestion is do dry firing at home, unload and clear, aim at a set point in your room like the center of the clock face. If you have a 1911 it can be dry fired all day, but if not see your owners manual. Make sure you have a proper grip on your weapon, and proper triggering. When triggering you press the trigger not squeeze and use the tip of your finger not between the first and second knuckle. Sight in your target and press the trigger, be wary of the aim through the triggerinng. Repeat several times and take note any continued problems. You will need to learn to move the end of your finger and not pull the tendon through your arm. Read the rest of the story here, and what do you all do to get better at shooting?
My senior parents asked me about guns. They were always afraid of them. So my Dad got a handgun, a sig. And I took Mom and Dad to the range for the first time.
My Mom was sitting waiting scared while we signed waivers. She was scared of shooting.
So we went in, Mom shot the Sig.
Out in the parking lot I asked her, so Mom how did you like it. She said boy that was fun.
And she was the best shot of all of us.
I think women are better shooters.
Once.
With a sight like that in front of me, might take several minutes..........
Depends on how much I have been drinking. Usually takes 1 hour per beer minus 2.
Because I’m such a lousy shot, I buy the best equipment available to help. Another trick is that on the day of shooting, I have no more than a 1/2 cup of coffee, don’t hype up on sugars and usually take a few Kava Kava pills, herbs that have a great calming effect.
For me the above seems to help.
Mrs. Submareener and I just invested in a Laser Ammo SureStrike system for more frequent training. If you have a revolver, get one for each chamber. It really makes a difference not to have to reposition the cylinder between shots.
Get the Laser Ammo LeserPET Electronic Target as well. It is very small, but it is amazing what kind of gun hand sense you develop using it. We got the adapter for our 12-gauge, but I haven’t tried it yer.
A sight like that needs no beer goggles...........
My wife observed a similar story. When she was taking the range portion of her CC class, a young woman was there with her boyfriend and was so scared of the gun she was crying. Thankfully he brought a .22 for her to shoot and by the end of the class she was smiling and talking about how much fun she had.
My mom can outshoot all of us, Dad got her a 45 but I thought it was too big. The guy at the range said “I wouldn’t want to be in front of her.”
The willingness to actually shoot someone/something. This requires considerable thought before actually being confronted/threatened.

Beat me to it!
That's what you call a peep sight...
I’m not very good at identifying firearms, but this photo confused me a bit.
Once I noticed that there was a caption “girl_shooting_pistol” and then noticed there was a firearm in the photo, both of which took quite a while, I thought I’d ask the experts. What kind of pistol is that? If I didn’t trust American Shooting Journal, I would have guessed it wasn’t a pistol at all
[Look just to the left of the cute girl if you don’t see the firearm in question initially.]
Question. My wife has only shot a handgun ONCE! I put a laser on the handgun to assist her. Will it help?
How long does it take for you to shoot accurately?
Uh, basically never.
Another female and gun story.
Long ago, my wife and my 2nd date was to the range. So we’re shooting and all of a sudden a hot 9mm shell bounces off the divider wal and goes down her low cut top. It’s funny now but I felt bad.
So when I took my daughter shooting I told her that story. She wore a tshirt to prevent that. What do you think happened? A shell ricocheted down her shirt too.
Now my daughter hates semi-autos.
I was thinking the same thing.
In fact, it took me a minute before I could read the article.
“I think women are better shooters.”
So do I. My younger sister is deadly with anything she picks up. Never practices. One of our family heirlooms is a beautiful break action .410 with a very tight choke. It will kill like a 12 gage, but has a much smaller pattern. A real experts gun. She took it pheasant hunting with her husband and his friends and humiliated all of them.
