The British Are Coming—to the Deep South
Condé Nast Traveler ^ | August 22, 2016 | Danica Lo

The Brits are coming for our po' boys, our music, and our swamp tours.

A deep-seated curiosity about America's cultural and political history brings international travelers south, in droves.

It will probably come as no surprise that for the more than 3.8 million Brits who travel to the United States each year, their most-visited regions stateside are California and the Northeast. But over the past 18 months, travel agents in the U.K. have noticed a surprising surge in inquiries around trips to the Deep South—making it the third most-requested destination at travel agencies such as Audley, who curate individual itineraries for clients.

"There's been a real spike in demand in the last 18 months for the Deep South," Alex Bentley, Audley's head of North America, tells Condé Nast Traveler. Some of the company's most popular programs sends clients on self-guided drives through New Orleans to Mobile Bay, through Georgia and the Carolinas, and to explore the music scene and bourbon distilleries in Tennessee and Kentucky, respectively. "There's great growth in that part of the country—it's now our third most-popular region after California and New England. There's something there that really resonates with our clients."

In part, this renewed curiosity is rooted in a search for an authentically American experience—and an interest in our country's culture and history, says Bentley...

Well, I suppose this can't be a bad thing. At least Guardian readers will have a more legitimate experience than Disney World when they start spewing their hatred towards our food, our tipping practices, our spelling, our history, our roads, our towns, our bourbon, our weather, our friendliness and spontaneity, our “slave past”,etc.

The Guardian has an excellent Food section. But when they feature recipes of American food (check out the recent one on red velvet cake) the cantankerous and endlessly complaining Brits will have over 300 anti-American posts. It’s generally very amusing!

I just read the article here - the person who wrote it up mentions his/her cynicism in Brits traveling the south - chalks part of it up to the usual hunt for poverty and racism that marks so much of European travel to the USA.

California is not a city and NYC is a great town.

The music in Nashville is amazing. Many bars have wonderful singers and bands trying to make their big break...and they are free except for the beer you consume listening to them.

And the people in the South are friendly and inviting.

Many great restaurants and home cooking.

“I say, old chap, what is this white concoction on my breakfast plate? `Grits’, is it? Where are the baked beans and, you don’t know what `bangers’ are? You colonials are a rum lot, surely, but maybe later you’ll point out some slave cabins that we can shake our heads at. And no, I don’t care to begin my day with that awful banjo music!”

;^)

During the recent EU soccer games, the local German restaurant was packed with Europeans, especially Germans. Nearly all were bi-lingual, and they had a great affection for beer.

The Southern dialect is the closest to what Brits spoke like when they first came here what with the “y’alls” (ye all) and drawls and so forth.

I’ve had authentic (or so I was told) fish and chips once, in New York.
Arthur Treachers was inedible by comparison.

But if they tend to vote liberal they may not be worth the trouble, all things considered.

Moaning ,Grumbling, and whinging are traditional activities for the UK tourist. Don’t let the traditions put you off ,there are big bucks to be earned from that crowd.
Just ensure a Ready supply of Tea. Not the iced Stuff. :)

Now if you will excuse me, I’ve got Bango practice this afternoon....

NY is Never a lost cause because Rudy is gonna be mayor again and save us!! :)

One can dream. And Honestly, if I didn’t read about NY, I’d think it was great cause my neighborhood and Island is great and we ignore the Bull ### laws deblah and cuomo make anyway.

Send them to Manhattan please :) Even Brooklyn and the Bronx.

Staten Island will be needed as a stronghold of resistance if civil war breaks out.

Down here in ‘Bama, we’re picking okra to pickle out of our patio garden. I’ll take that over ‘spotted dick’, thank you.

“Staten Island will be needed as a stronghold of resistance if civil war breaks out.”

Staten Island, the “other” NYC!

When I was driving long haul we called it The Island because it was so different than the burroughs of NYC proper.

Most companies let drivers opt out of delivering to NYC, The Island was a mandatory delivery.

I did determine that Staten Island was covered wall to wall with beautiful women driving expensive cars.
And the people I delivered to were genuinely nice and helpful.
Never had a problem on The Island.

In case of CW just blow the bridges and sink the ferries.
We’ll send the Southern Coastal Navy up with supplies.

Okra!?
The one southern dish I never took a liking to.
Given the choice between okra and spotted dick, I go with the disagreeable vegetable.
Seven days a week and twice on Sunday.

And don’t even think about bringing up haggis.
My family is proud of the fact we were driven from Scotland by the English king.
But never in my life would I let something like haggis touch my lips.

Thanks :)

Plenty of pretty girls with plenty of dad’s money.

Mafia ain’t quite dead yet. Plenty of guns and ammo here I’m sure.

Barbershop got busted for selling Israeli machine guns 2 weeks after I got a haircut there.

Stupid. Selling in broad daylight. Arrogance and too much greed.

But 350k folks here ready to hold the fort!!
