Katie Pavlich: 'There Aren't as Many Conservatives in the Country as We Thought'

The weekend's last RedState Gathering panel tried to keep a stiff upper lip in the face of the Trump Revolution.

Only reality kept getting in the way.

Katie Pavlich, a Townhall editor and Fox News contributor, spoke what was probably on many attendees' minds Sunday. She clearly didn't take any joy in putting it out there.

"There aren't as many conservatives in the country as we thought there were," Pavlich said during the last of three intellectually packed days in Denver. The rise of Donald Trump, compounded with avowed socialist Bernie Sanders, made that all too clear over the past six months.

"When people like [conservative Sen.] Ben Sasse are the 'enemy,' we're in a really bad spot," she added.

Pavlich shared the stage with Townhall.com's Guy Benson, RedState Managing Editor Leon Wolf and radio talker Erick Erickson.

The focus? Moving forward after Election Day.

No votes have been tallied yet, but the panel agreed on the outcome. Trump will lose, and lose badly to Hillary Clinton.

(snip)

The group pointed to leaders like Carly Fiorina, Josh Hawley and Sasse in particular as reasons for optimism.

"These are some good people, and they're on our team," Benson said.

The rise of Trump, whose statements on women and minorities have made him a laughingstock in many quarters, also undid eight years of outreach by Republican officials. Those groups are critical to the party's future success.
"Now, it's been completely wiped out," she (Katie Pavlich) said.
What I see is that those outreach efforts (i.e., clear pandering seen by many) alienated the white middle class more than what puny number of 'token' special group persons they attract.

Once you're on their plantation, you don't count anymore, only there to take orders from these 'leaders' and 'intellectuals'.

Personalities are not "conservative." Actions are, and saying "if you don't support "X" 100% then you're not conservative" is something Democrat trolls use on the internet, for instance: "Reagan did amnesty so if you don't want 10 times more amnesty than him you're not conservative."

Never bought that argument when liberals used it, not buying it now.

For instance, Donald Trump is incorrect on bathroom gender invasion policies, correct on defeating the Johnson Amendment. When has a GOPe "conservative" ever supported overturning the Johnson Amendment? But I've seen very few politicians that get every issue correct. Seems like that's just not going to happen. We have to vote for the best we can.

PS: I'm hoping a good Congress, Senate and Supreme Court can overturn Trump on bathroom gender invasion and he won't illegally make it happen.

Rush had a survey a couple of years ago that said the same thing. If the GOP thought conservatism was important, Cruz would have been their candidate.

Survival means finding winners, not ideological "high minded" self-righteous ego-driven fools.

For those conservatives who never find a candidate who is good or pure enough, remind them that Jesus isn't on the ballot this time. Ask who is their second choice.

I was not a Trump supporter during the primary and I don’t believe he has morphed into a solid conservative across the board, but he is on the right side of the key issues of the day (illegal immigration, Obamacare) and he has shown the willingness to fight to roll them back.

That’s enough for me, and far better than the options we’ve had in the past ... it took me a while to do the math, but we’ll call it 28 years - since Reagan. Bush I sold us out. Dole was lower energy than Jeb. Bush II wouldn’t fight, except to sell his compromises with the ‘Rats to us. McCain has been a wolf in poorly-stitched sheep’s clothing. I’m really not sure which direction Romney would have gone, but he was uniquely vulnerable on Obamacare, which was the issue that could have won that election.

Well Katy, what conservatives or so called republicans have done over the last 8 years has just gotten people incensed, people are tired of the Con game,Bernie Madoff politics.
This game has been going on forever, people are frustrated, conservative, liberal, progressive, black, white, home, transgender,This is insanity.
You don’t like Trump? Fine,he is the result of frustration over a country gone certifiably insane, men say they are women and are going to use women’s bathrooms, school children are going to have to get over their fear of male genitalia?
What do we get from the coward leadership in our country?
More of the same banal, tax the rich, white privilege blah blah blah.
Democrats put up a candidate who has been described by Democrats since her first job at 27 years old that she is a liar,an unscrupulous lawyer who attempted to undermine the rule of law and the constitution of the United States and she is leading in the polls?
God HELP US! Vote Trump!

Just listen to these media types chirp. You’d think these “experts” helped the GOP win the last two elections. They flopped, and now they are blaming Trump, who had nothing to do with their failures.

Democrats will vote for Hillary if she kills and eats a baby on live TV, but "conservatives" won't vote for Trump because he doesn't talk like them!! TO HELL WITH THE COUNTRY!!

The next GOP outreach will be to try and bring back Trump supporters who feel betrayed.

Take ObamaCare. How many GOP hopefuls campaigned on repealing the serially flawed legislation? Yet without controlling the White House, there was nothing a senator or congressman could do about it.

Rubbish! Article I Congress still possessed the power of the purse and there was at least one Senator who thought something "could be done about it."

I don't want to say bad things about Pavlich, but if Ben Sasse and Carly Fiorina are your ideal conservatives in this country, you can count me out.

There are people who are purists who are conservative. Many of them cannot bring themselves to vote for Trump.

That excuse is NOT applicable for those who were willing to vote for Romney.

Romney and McCain are acceptable as far these losers are concerned....

They have hijacked the conservative movement for their own globalist goals....

What a stupid idiot. So in her mind it should be okay for Ben Sasse to be able to mock and slam the GOP nominee. Is it me? Or do the never Trump idiots turn out to be people you just don’t like. Like the obnoxious kid in high school.

Absolutely right. Its about the elites, their sense of superiority, and their arrogant attitude of entitlement. They see themselves as the ruling class. They are the high priests that thou art not worthy of questioning.

These are the people who want to run the show. Its their exclusive club and we’re never going to be in it.

What’s so refreshing about Trump is that he’s an outsider and they can’t control him. And he threatens their little clique.

Even among some of those “purists” even Jesus may not be pure enough for them either.

Pretending they aren’t giving comfort and aide to the enemy doesn’t change the fact that they’re giving comfort and aide to the enemy. These people are not our friends.

Speaking of giving aid and comfort to the enemy, it's one of the main reasons that conservatives have diminished in number over the years. They send their kids to public schools. They buy the newspapers and watch the tv. The rot creeps in, because conservatives give it energy.
