Meat consumption in the United States and across much of the Western world has reached a level that is unsustainable, both for our planet and for our health. We owe it to ourselves to make a change. Our politicians owe it to us to enable that change.
The average American eats three times as much meat as experts deem healthy, the average European around twice as much. And the emerging economies are quickly catching up: by 2050, global consumption is expected to rise a further 76 percent.
Excessive meat-eating is partly responsible for an epidemic of obesity now one of the most costly social burdens, according to the consultancy McKinsey. Over-consumption of red and processed meat is contributing to the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, type-2 diabetes and certain cancers.

These "intellectual", liberal elites are the reason for all the nonsensical regulations we already have to deal with.
Every problem, both real and imaginary can be solved by MORE GOVERNMENTTM.
Trump Steaks for all!
Yes!!
WE *NEED* TO!!!
because REPUBLICANS or something...
The WaPo and Beltway mindset, always
“SHOULD THE GOVERNMENT STEP IN?”
No! Personal responsibility.
My body, my choice...
“Excessive meat-eating is partly responsible for an epidemic of obesity...”
You mean the crap they inject into them? Not to mention the “frankenfood” they let the “masses” consume. Only the demi-gods are worthy to eat untainted meat.
Ugh; Chatham House propaganda.
They can kiss my lily white a$$. If I ate to their recommendations I’d be diabetic and even more overweight than I already am.
Low carb works very well for me, and any attempt by the government to restrict me from eating what works for my body will be regarded by me as a direct assault.
Exactly where in the Constitution does the government have the right to tell me what I can or can’t eat?
This article highlighst what is at “steak” in this election.
Maybe they should try this out with SNAP and WIC first.
Strange bunch of people these liberals that do not want us to eat meat, drink soda, smoke but it is OK to kill thy unborn?? They totally lack ethics.
” Excessive meat-eating is partly responsible for an epidemic of obesity “
This is a LIE!
Most of the Obesity issue is caused by cheap government subsidized sugars and plentiful carbs....
government subsidizes CORN, corn is used to make corn syrups, and corn meal which is used in MANY cheap plentiful foods....
So obviously the solution is to get MORE government in to deal with the MESS government created....
Obviously...
How about we “Let the Market Decide” if people wanna be fat, let THEM!
For people who want to convince us that GOD is dead, the Progressive Liberal control Freaks sure want to play GOD with all our lives all the time...
Perhaps the “government should step in” and disallow the purchase of pricey beef (along with a huge list of “luxury” items) for those using food stamps. Most people I know cannot afford much for meat anyway, unless chicken is on sale for $1.49/lb or less, since we buy our own food.
As a contribution, I had some great slices of ham this morning. Tasty. If someone wants to go all veggie, go for it. Deal with the consequences but don’t tell me what I should and should not eat.
A side note: The so called food pyramid has screwed Americans since its inception. It is no wonder Americans are obese and have diabetes. Too bad the bureaucrats can’t figure that out for themselves.
Interesting story about how the food pyramid was created — yes, a government bureaucrat at the FDA flipped it and manipulated it so that low cost to produce (less healthy) food became dominant. The bureaucrat was concerned that the healthier protein based food sources would break the food stamp budget.
The rest is history.
